Clear orientation, accessible routes and a safe environment that is comfortable for everyone.
Accessibility becomes visible in everyday situations: on the route from the car park to the entrance, at the elevator, in a restroom that guests can use independently, and in emergency emergency information that everyone can understand and respond to. By embedding accessibility into infrastructure planning, businesses create environments where more guests can move independently and with confidence.
For me, accessibility means living a ‘museum with everyone’ — a vibrant meeting place that brings different people together and enables shared experiences. At Dom Museum Wien, this is reflected in low-barrier access as well as in diverse perspectives, formats, and approaches to art and culture. The result is an open museum that fosters exchange and in which as many people as possible feel welcome and included.
KEY FACTS
Access determines participation
Parking, entrances, and signage determine whether guests can reach a business independently in the first place.
Usable matters more than available
An accessible restroom that is blocked or hard to find is not accessible in practice.
Orientation supports independence
Clear routes, strong contrast, and easy-to-understand wayfinding make a building easier to use.
Safety plans must account for everyone
Emergency procedures are only effective if they explicitly include people with disabilities.
