Fitness and wellness areas are often difficult to access for guests with disabilities. Even small adjustments can enable greater participation and expand the services available to guests.
Core Requirements
Access
Design fitness and wellness areas to be step-free
Maneuvering space
Allow sufficient space between equipment (minimum turning circle of 150 cm)
Equipment
Provide at least one underpassable piece of equipment or adapted training area
Pool access
Enable entry via stairs with handrails on both sides or a pool lift
Communication
Provide an induction loop at the reception area of the wellness zone
Practical Tips
Improve access
Check for steps and use mobile ramps in the short term. Work towards step-free access in the longer term and communicate transparently which areas are accessible (via the website).
Make equipment accessible
Position at least one cardio machine so it can also be used by wheelchair users (e.g. rowing machine or recumbent bike). Keep sufficient space around the equipment and train staff accordingly.
Enable pool use
In addition to standard stairs with handrails on both sides, offer alternative entry options such as mobile or fixed pool lifts to enable as many guests as possible to use the pool.
Check changing rooms
Ensure changing rooms offer sufficient space, an accessible shower, seating options, and hooks and shelves at a reachable height. These details determine actual usability.
Raise staff awareness
Train staff regularly so they know which areas are accessible, which aids are available, and how to support guests professionally and respectfully.
