Itinerary - Walking in the footsteps of Johann Strauss

The itinerary is also available in the following languages:

Deutsch Italiano Español Français

Day 1 Morning:

To mark the 200th anniversary of his birth, the Theater Museum is devoting a comprehensive exhibition to the King of the Waltz. "Johann Strauss – The Exhibition" presents original objects from the Theater Museum's extensive collections and exhibits of the Vienna City Hall Library's Strauss Collection.

Vienna's Interactive Sound Museum offers an innovative and unconventional way to explore the world of music. The Virtual Conductor allows anyone who wants to try their hand at conducting the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra - or at least a video projection of it - to do so. Among the pieces of music to choose from is the famous Blue Danube Waltz by Johann Strauss.

  • Lunch

Enjoy traditional Viennese cuisine at Demel, Schwarzes Kameel or the city's oldest restaurant, Griechenbeisl.

Day 1 Afternoon:

Walk in the footsteps of Johann Strauss, starting at Vienna's most famous landmark: St Stephen's Cathedral, where Johann Strauss' first wedding took place in 1862. Next stop is Vienna's City Hall, which houses the magnificent Ballroom inaugurated in 1890 to host Vienna's first official ball. Strauss composed his own waltz for the occasion, and the Volksgarten, which is fittingly just around the corner, was a popular venue and coffee house in Strauss's day. It was here that Johann Strauss and his orchestra first performed the 1867 orchestral version of the Blue Danube Waltz. Today you'll find the Volksgarten Pavillon, where you can relax and enjoy refreshments from April to mid-September. The tour continues to St Charles Church, where Strauss celebrated his second wedding. The church is one of the most important baroque buildings in Vienna and the panoramic terrace offers a magnificent view of the city.

Vienna's coffee houses are an institution, and the city's many concert cafés offer a unique musical experience. There is something about the taste of Sacher Torte and apple strudel when they are accompanied by classical music composed by the King of Waltz, Johann Strauss, and jazz-inspired melodies.

  • Dinner

We recommend Salonplafond in the MAK or Labstelle for modern Austrian cuisine. For a vegan gourmet restaurant, try Jola, Vienna's first vegan fine dining restaurant.

Day 2 Morning:

Located in the former Zögernitz Casino, the Strauss House is a multimedia museum dedicated to the King of Waltz. Extensively restored, the original rooms bring the history of the Strauss dynasty to life. The Strauss Hall, where Johann Strauss once performed, is a venue for high-quality classical concerts.

Johann Strauss lived on Praterstrasse from 1863 into the 1870s, and it was here that he composed the famous Blue Danube Waltz. Reflecting his stature at the height of his career, his apartment was located on the most elegant and prestigious floor. The beautiful living and working quarters of the original apartment are now a memorial to the musician - complete with an exciting exhibition.

  • Lunch

Located on the Danube Canal, the restaurant Motto am Fluss may look like a ship, but it offers an Austrian take on modern international cuisine. Other nearby options include Wrenkh, which focuses on seasonal, local and sustainable cuisine, and Ramasuri, which offers Austrian and internationally inspired cuisine.

Day 2 Afternoon:

An escape room is an interactive group game in which participants must solve challenging puzzles and crack secret codes. The new and unusual Escape Room at the MuseumsQuartier is centred around the musical phenomenon Johann Strauss. It explores the private and public aspects of the composer's life and encourages reflection on one's own wishes, desires and fears.

The Vienna State Opera is one of the most prestigious opera houses in the world, offering world-class musical theatre some 300 days a year. This 40-minute guided tour takes you behind the scenes of the Vienna State Opera and allows you to discover some of the things that are usually hidden from operagoers.

  • Early dinner

Enjoy an early dinner before the concert at either the Glacis Beisl or Clementine im Glashaus.

We recommend attending a classical concert at one of the venues where Strauss performed during his lifetime, such as the MusikTheater an der Wien, the Musikverein or the Vienna State Opera.

Beginners' classical concerts are available for visitors who want to get their first taste of the world of classical music.

Day 3 Morning:

This new multidimensional exhibition explores the life, work and creativity of Johann Strauss. A unique, motion-activated headphone system, used exclusively for this immersive exhibition for the first time in Austria, creates a symphony of entertainment and information.

The Imperial State Rooms in the Neue Burg are home to an outstanding collection of historical musical instruments with a collection spanning five centuries. Highlights include instruments that were once played by famous musicians such as Mozart, Strauss, Liszt and Mahler.

  • Lunch

There are many restaurants to choose from around Karlsplatz. We recommend the restaurant Trude & Töchter in the Wien Museum or Gasthaus Buchecker & Sohn.

Day 3 Afternoon:

One of the city's most famous monuments, the Johann Strauss Monument, stands in the middle of Vienna's Stadtpark and embodies the city of music like no other. From 21 March to 20 May 2025, the monument's golden glow will also be the backdrop for a projected art installation that will extend throughout the park. Visitors will be able to meet seven female characters from the world of Strauss' operettas through augmented reality.

More than 150 years ago, Johann Strauss introduced the Viennese waltz to the world. Today, millions of ball-goers dance to it in three-quarter time. Take advantage of the opportunity to learn to dance the waltz at the very place where it was invented by taking an intensive dance course in Vienna.

  • Dinner

Dine overlooking the rooftops of Vienna on your last evening in the city. A couple of options include the Limón restaurant, which serves Mediterranean cuisine, or Das Loft, which combines classic Viennese cuisine with culinary inspirations from all over the world.

Even more Strauss:

  • Central Cemetery: Visit the final resting place of Johann Strauss at the Zentralfriedhof, once the largest graveyard in Europe.

  • Attend a Ball: Visiting Vienna in January or February? Then go and dance in three-quarter time at one of the 450 iconic Viennese balls.

  • There are many more Strauss-related events available in our database!
