Itinerary - Sustainable and Green Vienna

Life is good in Vienna. What the Viennese have long known to be true continues to be confirmed: In June 2025, the renowned British publication The Economist ranked Vienna second among the world’s most livable cities, following many years in the top position. The 2024 Mercer Study also placed Vienna second in its global ranking of livable cities. In 2020, the consultancy group Resonance Consultancy voted Vienna the "World’s Greenest City".

Getting to Vienna:

Travel to Vienna in comfort and in an environmentally friendly way by train. Numerous international and national train services guarantee a quick and easy way to get there from all over Europe.

The Lufthansa Group offers you the opportunity to make your flight more sustainable. With just one click you can reduce or offset the CO₂ emissions of your flight in an innovative way.

The City Airport Train (CAT) connects the airport with the transport hub at Wien Mitte in only 16 minutes and offers numerous additional services such as the City Check-In with baggage drop.

Day 1 morning:

Numerous cycle paths offer a whole new way to experience the city. We recommend the classic bike tour: Right around the Ringstrasse boulevard. The tour starts and ends where you like - for example, in the Stadtpark. You will ride along the Ringstrasse past magnificent Viennese landmarks.

If you don't have your own bike, simply rent one from a bike rental company or use a WienMobil bike, which can be rented and returned 24 hours a day at 185 stations within Vienna.

And because cycling makes you thirsty and Vienna can be proud of its tap water - refresh yourself in between at the numerous drinking fountains in the city.

Colorful areas, irregular shapes, often overgrown with rampant green: the Kunst Haus Wien, created by the artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser, is so unmistakable.

  • Lunch

For lunch we recommend Café Friedlich at Kunst Haus Wien or Suess'Kind Veganery.

Day 1 afternoon:

Did you know that Vienna has 12 city hiking trails with 14 possible routes and an average length of 10 kilometers each? Enjoy a hike on the Kahlenberg. The local mountain of the Viennese is located in the Vienna Woods and is one of the most popular destinations for the Viennese. This is mainly due to the stunning view that the Kahlenberg offers: On a clear day you can not only see the entire city from above, but even the Schneeberg, where Vienna's mountain spring water comes from.

Kahlenberg also offers a lot of action: in the Kahlenberg forest rope park you can climb, hang, swing, balance and just have fun.

  • Dinner

Either at a Viennese Heuriger - we recommend Buschenschank & Bioweinbau Obermann. Obermann stands out for its natural setting and family ambiance, whether in the welcoming restaurant, outdoor dining area, or service in the vineyard.

Or at Spittelberg - the revitalized Biedermeier district near the MuseumsQuartier has countless restaurants, cafés and bars with idyllic gardens, often slightly hidden in romantic courtyards. Tian Bistro at Spittelberg serves great vegetarian cuisine in a cozy ambiance.

Day 2 morning:

The cultural metropolis of Vienna is countering climate change with creative, innovative projects. Explore them together with the Austria Guides For Future® and discover, for example, the world's second tallest wooden skyscraper or the many green facades of Vienna! The varied tours take you through the Vienna of the future, where climate justice can become a reality in all areas of life.

Vienna is not only sustainable in terms of enjoyment and food, but also in the area of fashion design. Here are a few special tips:

Freudich Vintage Store: The owners of Rawfiction produce their fashion entirely without plastic in either the material or the packaging. Great importance is placed on ecological, fair trade fabrics, and production even takes place in Vienna. They can currently be found in the Freudich Vintage Store in the 7th district and in its online shop.

Greenground: Greenground offers modern fashion made from organic materials and vegan bags made from recycled polyester. The t-shirts by Tom Kaisersberger in his shop GuterStoff in Leopoldstadt are produced ecologically, fairly and climate-neutrally. These can be printed on site with different motifs.

Wiener Seife: The soaps are made by hand using a gentle cold mixing process based on a secret recipe handed down by the last Viennese soap maker, Friedrich Weiss. The sensual pieces based on coconut oil nourish and protect your demanding skin with the power of nature - without chemical additives, mineral oils or preservatives.

Lieber Ohne: The organic unpackaged shop in Vienna. Lieber Ohne offers regional organic food and other ecologically valuable products, many of them unpackaged, loose or in returnable containers.

Flea markte at the Naschmarkt: Old, forgotten, used and unused items are only available at the flea market on the Naschmarkt on Saturdays from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. under the motto: The early bird catches the worm!

  • Lunch

Lunch at Naschmarkt: Tewa am Naschmarkt or Orient & Occident.

Day 2 afternoon:

Enjoying ice cream in Vienna – that has a long tradition. In the 19th century, the first Italian ice cream makers came to the Danube metropolis to conjure up their sweet specialties here. Try a scoop at Helli & Leo, Vienna´s first organic ice cream manufactory.

Book a tour of the Spittelau Waste Incineration Plant, a Viennese landmark. Experience how heat is produced from waste: The waste incineration plant is a work of art, it is particularly clean and has set new standards in environmental protection. Look deep into the huge garbage bunker through the glass floor of the cockpit. And: take an exclusive look at the control center, where the entire waste incineration plant is controlled. You will also learn interesting facts about the eco-architect Hundertwasser and the Viennese waste and recycling system during a tour.

On the Naschmarkt, a colorful crowd buys fruit, vegetables and various delicacies from every country. Trendy restaurants are also increasingly finding a spot in the more than 120 market stands.

  • Dinner

For dinner we either recommend Die Burgermacher, Vienna's first restaurant specializing in burgers with high-quality organic ingredients, homemade sauces and creative recipe ideas that stand out from the crowd, or Restaurant Jola. There is no classic à la carte menu at Jola, but an evening full of food, served in several courses. The quality and working conditions of the production of the products that are used are extremely important to the owners.

Day 3 morning:

Schönbrunn Zoo is known for its colorful and exotic animal world. On a nature adventure trail consisting of three stages and a forest adventure trail, visitors can also get to know the local flora and fauna! Since May 2011, you can also admire and, of course, walk on a forest adventure trail. A little hidden - between the penguin enclosure and the Tirolerhof - is this most heavily frequented piece of forest in Austria.

The Lobau, the "water world" in the east of Vienna, has an area of 2,300 hectares, and makes up almost a quarter of the entire area of the Donau-Auen National Park. It is one of six Austrian national parks and protects one of the last major floodplain landscapes in Central Europe.

  • Lunch

Enjoy the Austrian cuisine at Gasthaus Tirolergarten or at Glacis Beisl

Day 3 afternoon:

Where is the topic of sustainability better addressed than in the Naturhistorisches Museum Vienna? The museum is striving to become CO2-neutral by 2030, among other things by expanding its own photovoltaic system. The topic is also increasingly dealt with in terms of the content.

Vollpension is a Viennese coffeehouse concept in which senior citizens bake cakes to earn extra money on top of their minimum pension and escape isolation in old age. As of now, baking courses for Gugelhupf, Sachertorte and Co. can also be booked. In a 3-hour baking course you will get a whole lot of granny baking knowledge with all their tips and tricks, plus all the ingredients you need for the respective cake.

  • Evening

Spend a relaxing evening at the Old Danube. The leisurely oasis of the Old Danube is only seven subway stations away from Stephansplatz. The contrast between the neighboring city landscape and the idyllic atmosphere around the former branch of the Danube River is particularly charming.
Tip: Rent a rowing, pedal or electric boat and experience a romantic boat picnic in the moonlight (e.g. at the boat rental in the Marina Hofbauer – open daily until midnight, only in good weather).

Or take a walk at the Green Prater. The Prater, one of the best city parks in the world, covers an area of six million square meters. Although it is located only three linear kilometers from St. Stephen's Cathedral, nature is thriving in this area. The "main artery" of the green Prater is the 4.5 kilometer-long Hauptallee. Straight as a ribbon, this broad boulevard between Praterstern and Lusthaus, a restaurant that was once an imperial hunting pavilion, is lined by 2,500 trees.

  • Dinner

Enjoy the last evening at Restaurant Ufertaverne, at Luftburg Kolarik im Prater, at Café Restaurant Lusthaus or at Moby Dick Bar & Eatery.
