Itinerary - Vienna for families
This itinerary is also available in the following languages:
Deutsch Italiano Français Español
Day 1 morning:
- Option A: Hop-on-hop-off-bus
If you want to see Vienna in a comfortable way, you could learn to love the Hop On/Hop Off buses that take you to all of the important sights (the ticket permits you to get on and off the bus as many times as you want during a one-day period).
- Option B: Take a walk
Take a walk through the city center of Vienna.
- Lunch
Typical lunch at the city centre of Vienna: Huth Gastwirtschaft, Plachutta Gasthaus zur Oper oder Lugeck Figlmüller Wien.
Day 1 afternoon:
Dive into the colorful adventure world of the Prater where 250 different stands and attractions wait for you. Go for a leisurely spin aboard the historic Giant Ferris Wheel, taking in the stunning views of the city from 64.75 meters above ground as Vienna's trademark Riesenrad revolves at a pedestrian 2.7 km/h.
Dinner
Have dinner at Prater: Schweizerhaus, Luftburg Kolarik im Prater oder Rollercoaster.
Day 2 morning:
The 16 children of Empress Maria Theresia wandered the rooms and corridors of the 300 year-old Schönbrunn Palace. Nowadays, the children's museum "Experience Schönbrunn Palace" whisks visitors young and old away to the everyday life of those times.
Lunch
For lunch we recommend Schönbrunner Schloss-Restaurant Joseph II.
Day 2 afternoon:
Option A: Schönbrunn Maze
Schönbrunn Maze, Labyrinth & Labyrinthikon - Once only the imperial family was permitted to walk here, now the Schönbrunn Maze is fun for everyone.
Option B: Schönbrunn Zoo
The oldest zoo in the world has in recent decades turned itself into one of the most modern and - by general consensus - one of the most beautiful zoos in the world.
Dinner at MuseumsQuartier
The MuseumsQuartier (MQ) is one of the largest cultural quarters in the world. Located at the border of the old city in the former imperial stables, it combines institutions of different art fields, restaurants, cafés and shops in an area of over 60,000 square feet in a post-modern ambiance, a combination of baroque buildings and modern architecture.
Dinner at Glacis Beisl or at Kantine. At Strandbar Herrmann next to the Danube Canal you can also enjoy good food and cool drinks as well as sun, sand and that holiday feeling.
Day 3 morning:
The best museums for children
Vienna boasts about 100 museums and collections – from very little ones to very big ones. There is something for children to enjoy too. Boring museums are a thing of the past – off to the art! Looking and joining in is on the cards.
Numerous museums focus on topics that excite the whole family – from technology to nature, the imperial age, art and music to chocolate: Naturhistorisches Museum, House of Music for Kids, Museum of Technology, Museum of Illusions.
Lunch - Hot Dog Stands in Vienna
The city’s hot dog stands – mostly small sidewalk kiosks – sell not only hot dogs but also wieners, Käsekrainer and fried sausage, and as well as a whole range of culinary surprises. They are complemented by an impressive variety of beverages from raspberry pop to specialty beers. We recommend Bitzinger hot dog stand at Albertina.
Day 3 afternoon:
Go on a journey of discovery through Vienna's idyllic wine growing areas on board the Vienna Heurigen Express. The ride takes passengers through picturesque wine towns, past wonderful vineyards and old vintners' houses. Round off the journey by experiencing a real Viennese 'heuriger', or wine tavern.
Dinner at a Heuriger
Kierlinger Vineyards & Wine Tavern: Visit this heuriger and step back in time. Enjoy traditional hospitality in these original surroundings, both in the idyllic courtyard garden with its ancient lime and chestnut trees, and the rustic tavern itself. See website for opening dates and times.
Mayer am Pfarrplatz: The great composer has lived for a while here, in the Beethoven house. The inner courtyard is covered in wild vines; traditional dishes and seasonal culinary delights entice you to come in.
Special recommendation for families: Danube Island Water playground
Kinderinfo: WIENXTRA-Kinderinfo provides a wide range of free information and advice about leisure activities in Vienna for children aged 13 and under.
Family-friendly hotels:
Numerous Viennese hotels have family rooms, special offers for children and have particularly child-friendly amenities, from cribs to diaper-changing tables: The Harmonie Vienna BW Premier Collection, Der Wilhelmshof, Hotel Henriette, JUFA Hotel Wien City or Novotel Wien Hauptbahnhof.
Child-friendly restaurants:
A tour of discovery through the city can make you hungry! Child-size portions, highchairs, changing table or a beautiful guest garden - here you can take your pick of child-friendly establishments.
