It serves as the foundation for data-driven decisions and the development of action plans. Embedded within the Visitor Economy Strategy, it is more than just an analytical tool: it also serves as a platform for new partnerships and alliances.
The STO acts as a compass for evaluating the environmental, social, and economic impacts of tourism. Instead of focusing solely on growth metrics, it pursues a values-based approach in line with the UN's International Network for Sustainable Tourism (INSTO).
A wide range of indicators are measured – from visitor and resident satisfaction to value creation, mobility, and waste management, as well as water quality and CO₂ emissions. All results are presented transparently in a public dashboard. They reveal trends, highlight areas where action is needed, and also point out where the data is still insufficient.
A particular strength lies in cross-sector collaboration. Within the Observatory, companies can develop innovative, sustainable success models, learn from each other, and align themselves with best practices. The data helps to identify trends and challenges early on. Building on this, action programs are developed jointly with local stakeholders. These programs set targeted priorities, are time-bound, and pursue clearly defined goals.
This creates a continuous process: data is not only collected but also translated into concrete measures. In this way, the STO generates measurable added value for Vienna – and strengthens the city both as a livable home and as an attractive destination.
The Vienna Sustainable Tourism Observatory was established in cooperation between Vienna Tourist Board, the Vienna Chamber of Commerce, and the City of Vienna (MA23 – Economic Affairs, Labour and Statistics). It is supported by the Austrian Federal Minstry of Economy, Energy and Tourism.
