Sustainable Infrastructure

Public transport/Wiener Linien

The Wiener Linien (Vienna’s public transport operator) provides the city with an excellent public transport network that transports 2.4 million passengers every day. Half of Vienna’s residents use the network on a daily basis with the convenient and generous Annual Ticket which costs € 461 (€ 1.25 per day).

Comprising 52 miles of subway routes (another six miles will be added by the expansion of the U2 and U5 lines in the next few years), 555 miles of bus routes and a 106-mile tram network, the Wiener Linien operates the largest transport network in Austria and the sixth-largest tram network in the world. Its services travel the equivalent of five times round the world every day and the distance to Mars each year. Their impact on the environment is kept to a minimum because the electricity used to power the vehicles comes from 100% renewable energy sources, and there are already ten completely electrified and zero-emission bus routes.

This public transport network enables visitors and residents alike to travel around the city sustainably and conveniently. Vienna’s compact city concept gives visitors the option to explore the city center entirely by foot and therefore with no CO2 emissions whatsoever.

What is known as the “last mile” when arriving by airplane is not a problem in Vienna either, with simple, reliable and sustainable options including the CAT (City Airport Train), mainline rail services or an S-Bahn ride.

Seamless Mobility

With its mobility platform WienMobil, Wiener Linien offers a way to combine public transport with sharing services (e.g. bicycles, scooters, moped and car sharing, bicycle service station, cabs, e-charging stations, bicycle lockers).

1,112 miles of cycle routes, 67,000 bicycle parking stations and 3,000 WienMobil rental bicycles across 263 WienMobil stations make cycling simple and appealing both for residents and visitors and repre- sent another means of getting around the city with a minimal carbon footprint.

Vienna City Card

This product offered by the Vienna Tourist Board is the city’s official visitor card and one of the best-selling of its kind in Europe. It combines the range of sustainable mobility options provided by Wiener Linien with attractive savings in museums and visitor attractions, at theaters and concerts, for shopping and in restaurants and certain hotels. The Vienna City Card was awarded the Austrian Eco-Label by the Ministry of Climate Action and Energy in 2022 and thus became the first certified green visitor card in the world. It is also integrated into the Vienna Tourist Board’s digital city guide app, “ivie”, which offers themed city walks and useful information about everyday life in the city.

Cultural Infrastructure

There are a multitude of cultural institutions in Vienna and it is not without reason that the city has a reputation as a global hub for culture and music in particular. The museums, concert houses and event venues have always been part of the city and were not just built to cater for tourists – they are used by residents and visitor in equal measure. Tourists help to finance the institutions and in doing so contribute to the city’s cultural diversity, which benefits both the city and its residents.
