Space Anthem, film opening credits

Space Anthem

Gigantic spaceships and rotating space stations floating through space in three-four time to the Viennese waltz - this iconic scene was created by Stanley Kubrick in his film “2001: A Space Odyssey”. The harmony between the weightlessness of space and the lightness of Johann Strauss' waltz “On the Beautiful Blue Danube” made film history. What once resounded in the magnificent ballrooms of Vienna suddenly became the anthem of outer space.

Since then, the Danube Waltz has regularly accompanied scenes in which weightlessness is to be expressed. But not only fictional characters such as Homer Simpson have been allowed to float in three-four time, because “On the beautiful blue Danube” has also found a permanent place in real space travel. Astronauts at the International Space Station regularly enjoy the Viennese waltz during wake-up calls and docking maneuvers.
