Sustainable Visitor Economy - Terminology

Tourism is commonly portrayed as a driver of sustainability. Practising sustainability requires it to be an integral part of day-today life if ecological, economic and social goals are to be achieved.

Ecologically sustainable

This term covers the forward-looking and careful use of natural resources. Tourism can make a contribution to protecting the environment and the climate by reducing the carbon footprint of visitors’ flights, accommodation, use of public transport and by minimizing the consumption of resources.

Economically sustainable

This refers to economic growth that benefits local residents and companies. The success of tourism does not just bring in revenue, it makes a major contribution to overall prosperity, economic growth in the city and local value creation. Associated sectors, as well as the economy overall and the local population, also benefit from spillover effects, agglomeration effects and job opportunities.

Socially sustainable

We understand this to mean social balance, distributive justice and fair working conditions. The complexity of the individual and his or her needs are the focus of our attention. Equality between all is a fundamental requirement for social harmony. Maintaining the social and cultural authenticity of the destination and interactions between cultures create positive and fulfilling experiences for visitors. Focusing on quality tourism helps to maintain a positive attitude towards tourism among local residents.
