Solid Waste Management

By integrating sustainable waste management practices, tourism operations can contribute to resource conservation, environmental protection, and the broader goals of sustainable development.

Vienna as city already has a well-functioning waste disposal program and has set further ambitious goals, emphasizing the principles of reducing, reusing, and recycling.

For tourism, waste reduction creates a particular challenge due to the use of single-use products and tourists’ unfamiliarity with local waste separation rules. Tourism activities tend to generate more waste than typical household consumption, as visitors expect higher hygiene standards and a broader selection of food and services. Additionally, people tend to use more disposable products while on vacation, further increasing waste volumes. A precise measurement of the waste generated by tourism in Vienna is currently not possible.
