The Strauss anniversary year in 2025 has been given the motto “King of Waltz. Queen of Music”. Johann Strauss II was already celebrated as the Waltz King during his lifetime. His queen was Vienna, the world capital of music. During this anniversary year, the city will be the big stage for a packed program of Strauss events. There is just as much room for traditional Johann Strauss music as for innovative projects. The diversity of these Strauss-themed events is incredible.
Multiple exhibitions and museums will present the Waltz King in a variety of ways: from the authentic Strauss atmosphere at the original performance venue to immersive experiences. Four of the five most important installations are designed to be permanent exhibitions, offering Strauss experiences beyond 2025.

Original Strauss locations

A visit to an historic Strauss site is an atmospheric experience. Stauss lived in the Johann Strauss Apartment at Praterstrasse 54 with his first wife Jetty for several years from 1863 onwards. The stately living and working rooms with music stand, Bösendorfer concert grand piano and Amati violin owned by Strauss are now a memorial to the musician and are accompanied by a detailed exhibition. It was here in 1867 that Strauss composed what is probably his most famous work, The Blue Danube Waltz. (www.wienmuseum.at)

The House of Strauss at Casino Zögernitz is another revitalized original venue. Johann Strauss conducted concerts in the majestic and acoustically outstanding Strauss Hall. A modern museum dedicated to the Strauss dynasty, concert performances and Viennese cuisine in the Casino Kulinarium, including a 500-square-metre beer garden reminiscent of Strauss’s time, make this location in Vienna’s upmarket Döbling district, away from the hustle and bustle, a Strauss destination for all the senses. Strauss experiences

The Johann Strauss Museum – New Dimensions offers a completely different Strauss experience; the new permanent Art & Tech exhibition is immersive, informative and interactive and presents the biography of the Waltz King in seven “acts” across 800 square meters of exhibition space. In an all-time first in Austria, a GPS-tracked headphone audio guide will lead visitors through the 75-minute audiovisual experience in eight languages (German, English, Italian, French, Spanish, Japanese, Chinese, Korean). The House of Music, Vienna’s sound museum, is both playful and interactive – and perfect for families too. Visitors of all ages can use the “Virtual Conductor” to conduct the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra to Strauss’ famous Danube Waltz. Johann Strauss II, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Joseph Haydn, Ludwig van Beethoven and Gustav Mahler are all featured on the floor dedicated to the great composers. (www.hdm.at)

The Theater Museum is hosting the temporary exhibition “Johann Strauss. The Exhibition” until August 17, 2025. A wealth of original objects, including the original score of the operetta “Die Fledermaus”, performance props and exhibits from his written works illustrate the historical and political context of the time. It sheds light on Strauss’ grueling life as well as his relationships with his parents, brothers, three wives and love affairs. (www.theatermuseum.at)
