2022 Rankings: Benchmarking Vienna
Vienna leads the way in numerous international studies and city rankings, especially in categories such as quality of life, infrastructure, culture, safety and innovation. Renowned international media – including The Independent, Condé Nast Traveler and Travel + Leisure – also named the Austrian capital among their top travel destinations in 2022. The benefits of these advantages are felt by visitors and residents alike.
Top Quality of Life, Education Hub
For many years, Vienna has achieved top marks in a host of international quality of life rankings. The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) ranked the Austrian capital number one in its 2022 Global Liveability Index. And Vienna came fourth in Campus Advisor's Best Student Cities in the World ranking – behind Melbourne, Newcastle and Seoul.
Top Meeting Destination
Vienna is one of the world’s leading meeting destinations. In the statistics on international congresses held worldwide in 2022, published by the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) in 2023, Vienna ranked first ahead of Lisbon and Paris with 162 congresses held. The Union of International Associations (UIA), which uses different statistical criteria, ranked Vienna fourth in 2021 with 195 international congresses, which represented an improvement of one place over 2019 and 2020 (fifth on both occasions). The list was headed by Brussels (319 meetings held), followed by Seoul (263) and Tokyo (256). The UIA data for 2022 was not available at the publication deadline.
Top Destination for Leisure Travellers
Numerous international media ranked Vienna among their top travel destinations in 2022. The Spanish edition of renowned luxury and lifestyle magazine Condé Nast Traveler named Vienna the world's best international destination (mejor destino internacional) in its 2022 Gold List. Vienna featured on the best travel destinations lists published by Travel + Leisure, Wanderlust, Bloomberg and The Independent. Vienna's Christmas markets were cited by Vogue and CNN Travel on their lists of the best Christmas markets in Europe (Vogue) and the world (CNN).
