Vienna Press Release – September 2024 Culinary insider tip: authentic Viennese fare at the Meidlinger Markt
The Meidlinger Markt is a particularly authentic Viennese market. The unique atmosphere of Vienna’s working-class district of Meidling is the reason for this. Everyone who wants to eat well is drawn here. Classic market offerings such as fruit and vegetables, meat, cheese and deli products are complemented by hip and cozy eateries that focus on regional produce. For visitors to Vienna, Meidlinger Markt is also strategically located between Vienna’s city center and Schönbrunn Palace along the U4 subway line. This makes a culinary detour from the U4 station Meidlinger Hauptstraße and the U6 station Niederhofstraße highly recommended.
A breath of fresh air and a broad audience
The Meidlinger Markt has undergone a remarkable transformation, particularly in recent years. At the beginning of the 2000s, like many other Viennese markets, it was on the verge of closing due to growing competition from cheaper supermarkets. A coalition of district politicians, business owners and local residents ensured that the market was revived. Up to 18,000 people now visit the market every week. Here you can encounter many genuine Viennese characters. The atmosphere is relaxed and easy-going. Almost all the stalls are run by the owners, which adds to the authentic flair. Farmers offer their produce at the market every day.
Culinary delights as far as the eye can see
The Wirtschaft am Markt is Vienna’s first market restaurant to be honored with a Haube, an Austrian gastronomy award. Head chef Heidi Ratzinger creates outstanding Viennese cuisine with modern and sometimes international influences. Heu & Gabel describes itself as an organic delicatessen and city tavern and focuses on high-quality regional products. It serves brunch, lunch and fine dining on Friday evenings. Organic food is also served two corners away: the Markt.grätzL bistro even has “Grätzel” in its name and serves classics as well as specialties such as organic game dishes and vineyard snails from the Viennese snail manufacturer Gugumuck.
Those with a sweet tooth will be in their element at Hüftgold, unofficially known as “probably the smallest patisserie in Vienna”. Just next door, the same owners run the delightful Café Ignaz & Rosalia. Live music draws the crowds almost every Friday evening. The Anna delicatessen is an institution with excellent specialty cheeses and sausages, coffee, bread and pastries. The Meidlinger Alm at the southern end has a beer garden atmosphere. The restaurant has a wonderful garden and serves Austrian cuisine.
Photo series: Heartbeat Streets
Five star photographers were invited to explore five of Vienna’s neighborhoods for the Vienna Tourist Board’s 2024 theme “Heartbeat Streets. Fall in Love with Vienna’s Neighborhoods”. Mafia Mashi, who has worked for the German Zeit magazine and the whiskey brand Hennessy, among others, photographed the Meidlinger Markt and its many different faces. The austere charm is clearly perceptible in the stunning snapshots. Nevertheless, everything here is very human and personable.
