Vienna Press Release – June 2024 The way to Vienna’s heart is through the stomach: what’s new on the culinary scene

The Wien Museum was THE reopening of Vienna’s museum scene. It reopened its doors in December 2023 - and with it came the new dining concept of trude & töchter. The ground-floor restaurant, trude, offers a welcoming atmosphere and modern interpretations of Viennese cuisine. The restaurant is named after photographer Trude Fleischmann, and the Wien Museum holds a large collection of her work. In summer, the restaurant’s garden also offers a beautiful view of Karlsplatz and the Karlskirche (St. Charles Church). The café &töchter on the terrace of the museum invites you to indulge in some coffee and cake and a wonderful view of the city.

Nearby, at the Kunsthalle Wien Karlsplatz, what used to be the Heuer has been taken over. The restaurant with its charming and popular beer garden will open at the beginning of July under the new name Café Kunsthalle am Karlsplatz. It will be a restaurant with a bar and music with a mix of Austrian and Asian cuisine.

From the classical...

The popular coffee houses at Schönbrunn Palace have also been taken over by the former imperial and royal court confectioner Gerstner. Under the name Gerstner K. u. K. Hofzuckerbäcker im Schloss Schönbrunn, the café-restaurant in the Kavalierstrakt will serve classics of Viennese coffee house culture and offer an apple strudel show, as will the Café Pavillon in the palace park during the summer months.

... to the modern

The operators of the successful Mochi restaurants have opened a new restaurant in the Dogenhof on the vibrant Praterstrasse: Cucina Itameshi offers an innovative concept in the form of Italian-Japanese fusion cuisine. The restaurant is certainly a new hotspot for Vienna. Both the food and the decor are excellent.

The new Rinkhy Delicatessen Bar in the trendy 7th district is equally as popular. The emphasis here is on hot and cold tapas and small delicacies including canned fish and oysters. Everything is accompanied by fine wines and equally excellent cocktails. The interior is reminiscent of a bistro and all in all very stylish.

Café Azzurro, also in the 7th district, follows the bistro theme. A high vaulted ceiling with exposed walls, lots of blue and straightforward cuisine make Café Azzurro very popular. The kimchi and Yiddish liver are signature dishes, complemented by a variety of dishes with lots of vegetables and creative salads.

In the 7th, the creative district, it goes without saying that there is a lot going on from a culinary point of view. The Restaurant Collina am Berg opened on Spittelberg. The best produce from local waters, hunts and organic farming is served here. The focus is on sustainability, down-to-earthness and closeness to nature. The menu features international dishes with an Austrian heart.

Aged beef is recognized as a delicacy all over the world. This meat rarely used to come from Austria, but the producers of XO Beef have changed this: they now use locally sourced meat from former dairy cows. The meat is delivered to the restaurant and, most importantly, served in the company’s own restaurants, where it is left to age for another seven weeks. The XO Grill serves the iconic Smash Burger, but the menu also includes a Reuben sandwich with pastrami and a Philly Cheese Steak, all made with aged beef from Austria. The second XO Grill restaurant in Neubaugasse in the 7th district is newly opened.

New Grätzel eateries

Top chef Harald Brunner has taken over the former Servitenwirt in the Servitenviertel. Brunner cooks French-inspired cuisine with an Austrian twist to complement the French flair of the neighborhood in his restaurant of the same name. In summer, visitors can sit in a beer garden here on the idyllic Servitenplatz with a view of the Servitenkirche.

The 20th district is not commonly blessed with exciting culinary projects. In addition to the Michelin-starred restaurant Mraz & Sohn, Rosebar Centrala has recently become a talking point. This is the name of Ola Szwarc and Nadim Adim’s new restaurant, which serves modern cuisine with Eastern European influences. The menu is written on a chalkboard and each dish tastes delicious. The ambience with its modern bistro flair is just as appealing.

A similar account can be given of the new Café Caché in the 15th district. Here, Lisa Machian and her husband Arnaud Champetier have taken over a former suburban coffee house and now serve up some really good food. The dishes are French-inspired, straightforward during the day and in the style of a high-end bistro in the evening. The retro-style ambience of the café remains unchanged.

Hotel wining & dining

Opened in April 2024 in an architectural gem from the 1950s, The Hoxton, Vienna welcomes guests to its French-inspired Restaurant Bouvier. The restaurant is located on the ground floor of the marble-clad mid-century building. On the roof, visitors can relax in the Cayo Coco Rooftop Bar with its 360-degree view of the neighboring Stadtpark, among other things. The rooftop terrace bar brings the vibrant flair of Havana to Vienna. The décor, the food and the cocktails all take their inspiration from Cuba.

The Hotel Grand Ferdinand on Vienna’s Ringstrasse has been around for some time, but the new Restaurant Limón has only recently opened on the top floor. The Limón exudes a Mediterranean flair with its southern-European ambience and selected dishes from the cuisines of Italy, France and Spain.

And finally to the bar

Some new cocktail bars have also opened in Vienna. Two new establishments in the 7th district stand out: The Soulmate Bar is a stylish high-end bar with excellent cocktails. From time to time there are also kitchen takeovers, where young talents cook up a storm in the bar. A short distance away is the Saint George Bar. Owner George Muka is also a bartender, has a penchant for fermented food and even created a Greek salad as a cocktail in the style of his homeland.
