Vienna Press Release – June 2025 A Taste of Vienna – New Openings Set the Stage for 2026
Vienna has transformed itself from a hidden gem into a hotspot for international foodies. The vibrancy of Vienna’s current gastro scene is once again being demonstrated by the opening of numerous new venues.
Viennese cuisine – classic & reloaded
The addition of Plachutta at Neuer Markt marks a prominent newcomer to the Viennese culinary landscape. Plachutta restaurants are especially renowned for their world-famous Tafelspitz. At this new bistro-style location, the focus is on Viennese classics, creatively paired with a rotating selection of monthly specials featuring seasonal ingredients.
In the picturesque Servitenviertel, the Tante Liesl bistro also serves Viennese cuisine – down-to-earth and unpretentious, both in food and atmosphere. It’s a place that has quickly become a neighborhood favorite.
At the new venue Das Drittl, Viennese cuisine gets a bold new twist. A young team is reinterpreting the classics with plenty of creativity and courage. After all, why shouldn’t a Germknödel dumpling be filled with pork belly? Guests are continually surprised by the inventive ways traditional dishes like Paprikahendl or Backhendl salad are prepared here.
das weinberg puts a spotlight on regional cuisine – offering both Viennese and Austrian dishes. Typical regional specialties and products such as Gugumuck Viennese snails, Styrian mountain shrimp, and char are served in tapas-sized portions, perfect for sampling and sharing (standard portions are also available on request). The idyllic garden of this suburban restaurant also comes highly recommended.
Vegetarian & vegan
Vienna is currently surprising visitors with innovative new takes on the traditional Beisl (bistro) concept. One such example is the Beisl Rosi. Instead of the classic Viennese fare typical of a Beisl, Rosi serves modern vegetarian cuisine – and does so at an exceptionally high level. Every course delights with new flavors, complemented by an extensive menu featuring a wide range of natural wines and non-alcoholic alternatives. The atmosphere is just as appealing: the vintage Bretschneider bar is a classic eye-catcher in the Beisl style.
A new vegetarian restaurant called Schwein has also opened its doors. Here, you definitely won’t find any pork on the menu — the animals are allowed to live on, which is playfully referenced in the restaurant’s name. The menu demonstrates how contemporary meatless cuisine can shine in a modern setting.
Larissa Andres and Jonathan Wittenbrink have already made a name for themselves with their vegan fine dining restaurant, Jola. In summer 2025, the duo will launch a new concept at Lara. Once again, only vegan dishes will be served, but instead of a set menu, guests can order à la carte. Lara is designed to be the relaxed little sister to Jola.
Regional focus
The Meinklang Hofküche is the epitome of farm-to-table, as almost all ingredients come directly from their own farm in the Seewinkel region of Burgenland. The restaurant is charmingly decorated in a Nordic minimalist style. The head chef’s extensive experience in Copenhagen is also evident in the dishes. The cuisine is modern and tastes fantastic. Products can also be purchased at the adjoining farm shop.
Dishes at the new Weimarck in the Freihausviertel are also prepared using products from the Meinklang farm shop and other local producers. Accordingly, the focus here is on seasonal and regional cuisine with a high organic content.
Direct contact with producers is also possible at the Markterei, a market hall located in a former hydraulic engineering laboratory in the 9th district. Every Friday and Saturday, Markterei opens its doors and offers producers a platform to showcase their food. Visitors can browse the stands, sample the products, and enjoy them at a large communal table in the center of the room. A pretty garden also invites guests to eat and drink outdoors. During the summer months, Markterei transforms into an urban Heuriger (wine tavern).
And a very special café has also opened its doors this year: the Kuchenamt offers the finest coffee culture and handmade pastries. The café is a project run by wienwork, a non-profit and inclusive company, where people with and without disabilities work side by side. Young people are also trained here as restaurant professionals through an inclusive vocational education program.
International cuisine
Otto will Meer is a new restaurant with a focus on fish and seafood, infused with a Spanish touch. Naturally, a classic paella is also featured on the menu. The restaurant is located in the Otto Wagner Schützenhaus on the Danube Canal, a jewel of Art Nouveau architecture nestled in the city’s popular riverside district. Inside, guests are welcomed by a vibrant, colorful interior.
Vienna’s historic Stock Exchange building on the Ringstrasse has once again become home to a new restaurant. At Nikkai, guests can look forward to an exciting blend of Asian and European fusion cuisine, all set in an ultra-stylish ambiance within Theophil Hansen’s historic architecture.
The new steak restaurant Heat does not see itself as a traditional steakhouse. Here, the focus is on sourcing from regional suppliers such as Höllerschmid, Wagyuhof, and XO-Beef. Every dish is prepared on a lava stone grill. In summer, the garden offers the best views over the Danube.
New hotel restaurants
Vienna’s hotel scene is also seeing plenty of culinary innovation. Top chef Patrick Müller presents a sharing concept centered on French cuisine at Mon Cher in Hotel O11 on the Ringstrasse. At The Leo Grand, the new Cosmo Kitchen restaurant serves international dishes with Viennese and French influences. Alongside the renowned Michelin-starred Edvard, the Brasserie Sophie has recently opened at Anantara Palais Hansen Vienna Hotel, offering a meeting point for European brasserie culture and Austrian culinary tradition. The legendary Silver Bar has also reopened under new ownership at the recently relaunched Hotel Das Triest. The hotel restaurant Bistrot Bertarelli at Das Triest serves Northern Italian and Viennese specialties. The Mandarin Oriental Vienna is set to open on Riemergasse in late summer 2025. Executive chef Thomas Seifried is responsible for the concepts behind the fine-dining restaurant, a brasserie, a café with patisserie, and a cocktail bar. Culinary highlights will center on seafood and fish, with French and Asian influences.
Cocktail bars & wine bars
“Der schöne Ernst” is a new coffee and aperitivo bar at Hotel Henriette on the trendy Praterstrasse, a street experiencing a local boom. Here, the focus is on various spritz creations, draft Prosecco, and fresh rolls. In other words: Austrian-style aperitifs – though breakfast is also served. A similar concept awaits at the bar Alexandra, which also embraces the aperitif culture and is designed as a daytime bar. Alexandra’s husband, Roberto Pavlović Hariwijadi, a well-known figure on Vienna’s bar scene, prepares some of his signature cocktails here – served directly at your table from a mobile bar cart.
The successful operators of the Kleinod bars have now opened another cocktail bar on Vienna’s Ringstraße. At Kleinod am Ring, the offering is further enhanced by a refined selection of dishes. Guests can also dance in the basement, and the renowned Kleinod cocktails are available on every floor. Das Weindl is a new, stylish wine bar with a special focus on Austrian wines. High-quality charcuterie and cheese selections complement the experience.
