For 125 years, the world’s image of Sisi continues to reduce her to little more than beauty, body cult, and drama.

In an effort to finally transform the oversimplified image of Empress Elisabeth, the iconic painting by Winterhalter was covered and replaced with a new and surprising portrait of Sisi in honor of International Women’s Day 2023. It redirected the visitor’s gaze away from the superficial and to the fundamentals. “Sisi’s New Portrait” presents a poignant and minimalist poem with facts about the empress that have been lost over time to her image.
