Vienna Media News 03/2022 New Hotels in Vienna – Imperial Luster, Innovative Luxury and Sustainable Lifestyle
Homage to Emperor Leopold I: The Leo Grand
Just a few steps from St. Stephen’s Cathedral, Vienna-based developers Lenikus are transforming a heritage-listed building into a luxury hotel with 76 rooms and suites. Once completed, The Leo Grand will be more than just a hotel: a combination of its prime location and an uncompromisingly – and unconventional – luxury concept will see this accommodation set new standards. A celebration of individuality and contemporary indulgence, the hotel is scheduled to open in April 2022.
Head designer Gabriele Lenikus and her team have delivered a bold reconsideration of Baroque opulence, recasting it in a spectacular present-day light. The design pays homage to the eccentric, larger-than-life and art-loving Emperor Leopold I (1640-1705), who is a constant presence here, encouraging visitors to embark upon a voyage of discovery, both at the hotel and elsewhere in the city. The Leo Grand’s character also extends to its hospitality offering: which includes what must be the capital’s most exclusive Schanigarten café, a covered courtyard, an elegant bar and several private dining areas.

Pure luxury on the Ringstrasse: Almanac Vienna
Currently taking shape on Vienna’s showpiece Ringstrasse boulevard, the Almanac Vienna will add another luxury highlight to the capital’s hotel portfolio. Once completed, the five-star-plus accommodation will offer 111 units, more than two thirds of which are suites. It is located in the historic Palais Henckel-Donnersmarck, a venerable old mansion house which is being completely refurbished for the project. Its new function rooms are tipped to be among the nicest anywhere in the city. A spa, a concept store, a coffee shop and a high-end restaurant with bar complete the luxurious picture. Scheduled to open in late 2022/early 2023.
First Rosewood in the German-Speaking Countries
Another luxury addition, the 5-star Rosewood Vienna, is set to open its doors in a sought-after first district location in summer 2022. It is the fifth Rosewood Hotel in Europe and the first to open in a German-speaking country. Discerning guests have the pick of 99 rooms and suites while various function rooms are available for meetings, conferences and gatherings of all kinds. The lavish reworking of this historic former bank building dating back to 1830 has successfully retained the property’s authentic charm. Designed by BEHF Corporate Architects in Austria and London studio Alexander Waterworth Interiors, the hotel has various bars and restaurants including a rooftop bar with fantastic views of the city and an intimate garden restaurant serving European cuisine. The Rosewood Vienna also has its very own retreat and haven of relaxation: Sense, A Rosewood Spa.
Cosmopolitan Island of Greenery Near MuseumsQuartier: Hotel Gilbert
The Hotel Gilbert recently celebrated its grand opening on December 21, 2021. This family-run 4-star hotel is already making a name for itself thanks to its cosmopolitan philosophy and outstanding service. Created by BWM, the interior design concept provides a clear thread running through all of the 57 fancy flats, classy suites and epic lofts. Amenities include a pair of meeting rooms, gym and sauna as well as e-Vespa and e-bike hire.
Its green facade sends out a strong message about sustainability and the need to adapt to a changing climate: the living wall system installed by Dutch greening specialists Sempergreen and planned by Green4Cities in Vienna helps keep temperatures down while cutting noise levels. There are also luscious terraces, a verdant courtyard and large amounts of plants inside the building. At hotel café-brasserie &flora, chef de cuisine Parvin Razavi’s dishes are fully in line with the principle of “from root to leaf”: which means almost no part of the vegetable or fruit goes to waste.

Hip Hotel in a New City Development: Bassena Wien Donaustadt
“Bassena” are the communal water taps with sinks that used to be found on the corridors of Viennese apartment buildings, where neighbors would stop for a chat. That said, every room at Hotel Bassena Wien Donaustadt does have its own sink! Bassena Wien Donaustadt is due to open in the new Vienna Twentytwo quarter in the twenty-second district in the third quarter of 2022. Just like the Bassena Wien Messe Prater, the four-star hotel promises to be a hip, unconventional hotel and relaxing retreat all rolled into one. Its 198 rooms, each of which is just under 17m² are spread across nine floors.
The first floor is a communal zone featuring a library, Bassena Kitchen (incl. community table and bar with food and drink available from morning until evening), a living room, wintergarden and terrace with table service. Created by Kitzig Design Studios, the interior design is young, dynamic and brimming with life. Popular recreation areas such as the Danube Island, Donaupark and Old Danube are just a few minutes away.

Successful Social Business: magdas Hotel Vienna City
magdas Hotel is Austria’s first ever social business hotel. Committed to helping people from refugee backgrounds to gain a foothold on the labor market, it gives them the professional hospitality industry qualifications they need to do precisely that. The first magdas location at the Prater is moving to a former seminary in the third district, where it will open in September 2022: The new magdas Hotel Vienna City offers 85 rooms, two event spaces, a restaurant and a former chapel offering myriad meeting options that go far beyond the traditional confines of a hotel business. Architecture studio BWM was tasked with adapting the 1960s building, ready for its new purpose. In the rooms, a combination of new designer furniture as well as reused and upcycled elements will reflect the rich diversity at play at magdas. Sustainability was key to the construction and energy scheme: the former car park is now a garden, with greening measures also in place for the facades and terraces.
