ECM Benchmarking Report 2015-2016

European Cities Marketing (ECM), the leading network of city tourism organisations in Europe, launched the 12th edition of the “European Cities Marketing Benchmarking Report” during the annual conference in Madeira in June.

The report - produced by the ECM Editorial Group in collaboration with MODUL University Vienna - includes the latest figures about the performance of European cities in 2015 and illustrates the main trends in city tourism of 121 European cities between 2011 and 2015. With more than 100 pages of tables and graphs, the report presents major developments concerning bednights (total and international), bed capacities and growth rates. In addition, the report includes detailed information about the performance of the top 9 European source markets.

Over the past five years, bednights in the ECM report’s cities have been increasing at a faster rate than those of EU28 nations, which demonstrates the importance of city tourism. The average annual growth rate for the ECM report’s cities between 2011 and 2015 was 5.1%, while for EU28 nations the average annual growth in the same period was 4.1%. Further, the report provides insights into the tourism density of cities (relation bednights – inhabitants). As of this year, detailed densities according to the different seasons are also available.
