Pool season starts in Vienna
11.6.2021 - When temperatures in the city start to soar, the capital’s outdoor pools and lidos provide refreshing respite from the heat all the way through to mid-September. This year, a number of special measures will be in place to make sure everyone stays safe.
Like last year, the municipal pools will operate a traffic light system in 2021: this allows would-be bathers to check which pools are already full (red), getting there (amber) or still have plenty of space left (green). Tickets will go on sale in advance for the first time in 2021 – like last year, they cost EUR 3 for adults, EUR 2 for young people and senior citizens and just EUR 1 for children (https://www.wien.gv.at/english/leisure/bath/index.htm ).
A ship on the Danube Canal with a pool on top: the Badeschiff is the place to go for a dip right in the middle of Vienna. Its floating pool is 27 meters long. A bar and galley serving international cuisine ensure that no-one goes hungry – or thirsty.

The banks of the Old Danube are lined with nostalgic lidos, boat hire services and lots of restaurant terraces. Popular destinations include Strandbad Alte Donau and Strandbad Gänsehäufel, both of which offer pools, wild swimming beaches, nudist zones, wellness areas and plenty of shower facilities. Spread over around 300,000m², Gänsehäufel is one of the largest lidos in Europe.

The Krapfenwaldlbad on the fringes of the Vienna Woods is a magnet for the chic set, and also a popular choice among the LGBT community. Oozing nostalgic 1930s charm, the complex opens up onto fantastic views of the city below. The Döblinger Bad and the Schafbergbad also have some pretty impressive views of the city to offer.

Back in 1900, the Schönbrunner Bad was home to an imperial swimming academy. Today it is one of the capital’s nicest summer lidos – an oasis of tranquility with lawns, swimming pools, gym and wellness area (incl. sauna), as well as a restaurant and the nearby Schönbrunner Schlosspark containing Empress Sisi’s famous former summer residence.

Patrons at the Hotel Grand Ferdinand not only enjoy all the amenities that come with a top hotel, but also have year-round access to the rooftop pool with average water temperatures of 23°C. The hotel itself is located in a heritage-listed building on the Ringstrasse boulevard and the views from the uppermost Grand Étage take in the whole city.
