Hotel Motto

When it opens in fall 2021, Hotel Motto will add a new hotel to the Viennese portfolio that in many ways is in a class all of its own. located on Mariahilferstrasse, the capital’s busiest shopping street and one of the liveliest spots anywhere in the city, the new arrival will serve up a touch of 1920s Parisian charm, contemporary Viennese style and a dash of Scandi coziness. Its official tagline is “Vienna meets Paris”. And the opulence of the interiors is definitely on-message: featuring floral fabric wallpaper, decorative mirrors and fun chandeliers, the rooms and suites exude a dreamy, relaxed and creative ambience. Custom carpets, furniture, tiles and lamps designed exclusively for the hotel by Arkan Zeytinoglu Architects are paired with vintage furnishings – some of which are actual originals from the legendary Paris Ritz. But Hotel Motto is not just about a playful take on the past. The creative spirits behind the 91 rooms and suites at this boutique hotel talk about an “unusual mix of punk rock and avant-garde”. It also has plenty to say for itself from a culinary perspective: high above street level on the roof of the historic 1870s building is a restaurant complete with bar and terrace. On the ground floor it has its very own organic bakery that is every bit the equal of the rest of the luxury establishment in terms of decor.

Welcome to Superbude!

The wave of new openings starts in June 2021 close to the famous Prater park when Superbude Wien welcomes its first guests. As the first Superbude hotel outside Germany, this innovative accommodation represents something of a milestone. Guests can look forward to a concept that combines various aspects from different worlds: “Hotel comfort, hostel vibe and home feeling” is the Superbude ethos. It is aimed at a diverse clientele, from weekend visitors to business travelers looking for something a little more relaxed. The interiors bear the creative signature of Viennese design studio Atelier Karasinski and Archiguards architects, who worked together to come up with an urban, contemporary and young design. Atelier Karasinski founder Laura Karasinski is Vienna’s most sought-after interior designer for shops, bars and restaurants with that certain special something (www.atelierkarasinski.com). Hotel guests can choose between 178 rooms ranging from 20-57 square meters. Superbude is also available for meetings and events. And it has another ace up its sleeve as far as the culinary side of things is concerned: a fantastic Israeli restaurant with bar and rooftop terrace in the shape of NENI am Prater.

Zeitgeist zone: Zoku Vienna

The next new arrival, scheduled to open right next door to Superbude on June 1, is Zoku Vienna, which is the Netherlands-based Zoku group’s first foray into the Austrian capital. Here, the innovative focus is on balancing leisure and working-from-home requirements. Its special home-office hybrid solution is designed to appeal to people who have to travel a lot for work. That said, anyone traveling privately will also be in the best possible hands thanks to the stylish and beautifully thought-through interiors at this 131-room boutique hotel. With a touch of hostel chic, the Zoku Hotel philosophy is all about creating places that feel like a home from home the moment guests step through the door. Social spaces are just one of the ways that the operators achieve this: by giving guests a place to mix with each other it creates a friendly local neighborhood vibe. Hotspots include the rooftop terrace overlooking the Prater park, an in-house event center and a Living Kitchen where everyone can sit down to dinner together at trestle tables.

Wood but not wooden: Dormero HoHo

Dormero HoHo, one of the more out-of-the-ordinary new arrivals on the Viennese hotel scene, is the Domero Group’s first development in Austria. So getting the location exactly right was a must: due to open in July 2021, the hotel can be found in one of the largest development zones in the whole of Europe, Seestadt Aspern. This lakeside community is just 20 minutes from the city center by subway. HoHo, the building that houses the hotel, is one of the tallest timber high-rises in the world and a beacon for sustainable construction methods. Made from 75% timber, it towers 84 meters above street level. The hotel itself promises a laid-back cosmopolitan feel and a youthful atmosphere. Guests staying at the 143-room Domero HoHo are highly unlikely to forget the address: Janis Joplin Promenade. Why was it chosen? When naming the streets, the City of Vienna decided to make a statement about modern urban development by giving preference to female personalities.

2022 and 2023: Rosewood and Mandarin Oriental

Voted Most Desired Preferred Destination of 2021 this year by luxury travel network Traveller Made, Vienna is set to shake up the luxury hotel segment over the next few years. Construction work is currently at full tilt on Graben, one of the most prestigious addresses in Vienna’s old town, where Rosewood Hotels is building its fifth European accommodation, a five-star hotel scheduled for completion in summer 2022. But it is not just the macrolocation that sets it apart: the building itself is a former bank dating back to the 1930s, which will undergo significant work ahead of its rebirth as a hotel with 99 rooms and suites.

Not to be outdone, there is another luxury highlight in store for 2023: the first Mandarin Oriental hotel in Austria, which is taking shape in a beautiful old turn-of-the-century Viennese art nouveau building on Riemergasse, close to St. Stephen’s Cathedral. The blueprints are for 151 rooms and suites as well as 17 luxury penthouse apartments. The honor of designing the Mandarin Oriental fell to renowned London-based outfit Goddard Littlefair, who have previously put their inimitable stamp on various upscale accommodations including the Intercontinental Hotel Berlin, one of the Hiltons in Munich and the Corinthia Hotel Budapest.
