Mar 24-Jun 27, 2021: Daniel Spoerri / Bank Austria Kunstforum Wien

Born in Romania and a resident of Vienna since 2007, Daniel Spoerri is widely credited as the founder of “eat art”, a genre that involves the construction of unflinching still lifes using three dimensional objects. The exhibition at the Bank Austria Kunstforum Wien opens up a wider perspective on his diverse oeuvre in a comprehensive retrospective. Besides collages and assemblages composed of everyday materials, it will present his bronze sculptures as well as various works related to script and textiles.

Apr 15, 2021-Mar 13, 2022: Fritz Wotruba. The Church at Mauer in Vienna / Belvedere 21

Forty-five years after the Church of the Most Holy Trinity (more-commonly known as the Wotruba Church) was consecrated, the Belvedere 21 will for the first time be presenting an exhibition specifically dedicated to this seminal piece of architecture on the Georgenberg hill in the leafy suburb of Mauer. Highlights include architectural models, sketches, photos and film documents. Highly controversial at the time, the church building was designed by the Austrian sculptor Fritz Wotruba (1907–1975) and completed between 1974 and 1976 in collaboration with the architect Fritz Gerhard Mayr.

Apr 16-Sep 26, 2021: The Body Electric. Erwin Osen – Egon Schiele / Leopold Museum

The Leopold Museum is presenting a number of recently discovered drawings by Erwin Osen (1891–1970) which he created at Vienna’s 2nd Garrison Hospital during the First World War. These pieces are juxtaposed against various works by his companion and model illustrator Egon Schiele (1890-1918), whose oeuvre also included depictions of patients. Together, they expand and enrich our understanding of Viennese Modernism and its artistic practices, which were themselves closely linked with clinical medicine.

Apr 21-Oct 3, 2021: The Women of Wiener Werkstätte / MAK – Museum of Applied Arts

Unlike Wiener Werkstätte’s numerous male representatives (such as Josef Hoffmann, Koloman Moser and Dagobert Peche), relatively little is known about the 180 women who also made a significant contribution to the development of the cooperative – and Viennese artisan design in the process. To redress the balance, the MAK is bringing artists such as Gudrun Baudisch, Vally Wieselthier, Mathilde Flögl, Paula Lustig and Mizzi Vogl into the spotlight in 2021. A collection of more than 600 exhibits will provide an insight into hitherto virtually unknown and at times radical female design in Vienna between 1903 and 1932.

Apr 23-Aug 29, 2021: Elfie Semotan – Attitude and Pose / Kunst Haus Wien

Kunst Haus Wien is paying tribute to the great Austrian photographer Elfie Semotan with an extensive retrospective on the eve of her 80th birthday. The exhibition covers six decades of creative output, including her touching landscape photographs and still lifes. With countless commissions for major glossy magazines to her credit, Semotan’s work shaped the international fashion and advertising scene.

May 28-Oct 3, 2021: 2021 Vienna Biennale for Change. Planet Love. Climate Care in the Digital Age / MAK – Museum of Applied Arts

Combating climate change together: numerous Viennese museums and galleries (MAK, University of Applied Arts Vienna, Kunsthalle Wien, Architekturzentrum Wien, the Vienna Business Agency, Kunst Haus Wien and the Austrian Institute of Technology) are joining forces in 2021 under the motto “Planet Love”. Innovative ideas and solutions proposed by artists, designers and architects will be presented in exhibitions and discursive projects – with the common goal of “climate welfare” providing the golden thread.

Jun 19, 2021-Jan 16, 2022: Enjoy – the Changing mumok Collection / mumok

There’s always a good reason – or three – to celebrate. The mumok’s new temporary exhibition marks three major milestones in the museum’s history all at once: the 40th anniversary of the Ludwig Foundation, 20 years at the MuseumsQuartier and a decade under Director Karola Kraus. Taking up the majority of the museum, it presents key gifts and acquisitions of the past decade as it shines the light on everything from early modernist works to contemporary art.

Sep 17, 2021-Jan 9, 2022: Modigliani – Picasso. Revolution of Primitivism / Albertina

The Albertina is marking the 100th anniversary of the death of the great Italian painter and sculptor Amedeo Modigliani (1884-1920) by putting his works on show in Austria for the first time – including a number of his famous nudes, portraits and sculptures. In another first, the exhibition will present the artist, who is known for his alcohol and drug fueled excesses, as a leading artist of the avant-garde. It will also feature works by such artists as Pablo Picasso, Constantin Brâncuşi, and André Derain, as well as artifacts from prehistoric, archaic and non-European civilizations.

Oct 5, 2021-Jan 16, 2022: Titian’s Vision of Women. Beauty – Love – Poetry / Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna

The Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna is celebrating its 130th anniversary with a special fall exhibition focusing on depictions of women in the oeuvre of the great Venetian master Titian (ca. 1488-1576). In all, around 60 paintings will feature, many of which are taken on loan from leading international collections including those of the National Gallery in London, Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Louvre in Paris. About 20 paintings by Titian will be surrounded by the great masters he inspired such as Paolo Veronese, Jacopo Tintoretto, Palma Vecchio, Paris Bordone and Giorgione.

Oct 21, 2021-Feb 1, 2022: Treasures from the Forbidden City – from the Ming to the Qing Dynasty / Weltmuseum Wien

2021 marks the 50th anniversary of formal diplomatic relations between Austria and China. In honor of the occasion, around 120 treasures from the historic Palace Museum in the Forbidden City in Beijing – including portraits, items of furniture and porcelain – will be on display in Vienna. In return, the “600 Years of Imperial Collecting. Treasures from the Habsburg Dynasty” exhibition will put exhibits from the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna on show in Beijing in August.

Oct 22, 2021-Jan 30, 2022: The Age of Dürer. Austria at the Gate of the Renaissance / Upper Belvedere

Lucas Cranach the Elder, Albrecht Altdorfer, Jacopo de’ Barbari are among the contemporaries of Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528) who were all active in Austria around 1500 and the decades that followed. Created during the transitional period from Late Gothic to the Renaissance, their works reveal a new form of artistic self-conception and anticipate the path toward modernism. In fall 2021, the Belvedere is devoting a comprehensive exhibition to this chapter of art history, which has received relatively little attention thus far.
