Vienna Media News 09/2019 Vienna, the stage is yours: Inside the Opera

The heart of the music world beats on the Ringstrasse boulevard. The Vienna State Opera, which celebrates its 150th anniversary in 2019, is a place filled with sights and sounds – not only in the auditorium, but behind the scenes too. Sound pervades the entire venue, and the opera building is one giant resonance chamber: the artists’ changing rooms where the singers warm up their vocal chords before going on stage, the orchestra pit where the musicians tune their instruments, the backstage area, the rigging loft, the canteen with its clatter of dishes, and the ballet studio where the dancers’ steps can be heard.

Guided tours lift the curtain on life behind the scenes at the world’s largest repertory house. The 40-minute tours are packed with fascinating insights into the venue’s history, its architecture and life behind the scenes. Starting in the foyer, they take in the grand staircase, the state rooms, and the auditorium with views of the stage.

During the ball season, the Vienna State Opera Ball is transformed into a magnificent ballroom for the night. Te he world-famous Opera Ball (Feb 20, 2020), sees leading international figures from the worlds of art, politics, music and business converge on the Austrian capital each year.
