Vienna Media News 08/2019 Vienna, the stage is yours: Where Holly met Harry

Where exactly is the column that Harry Lime used to get down into the sewers? Where was his apartment? Where did he meet his friend Holly Martins? Carol Reed’s classic movie The Third Man (1949) starring Orson Welles and Joseph Cotten plays out in post-war Vienna.

Many of the locations featured on screen can still be visited to this day. The Third Man sewer tour heads below ground into the eerie world of the Viennese sewerage system. Above ground, the walk takes in other original locations and there is even a special museum devoted exclusively to the film. There is no better way to get in the mood than a trip to the Burgkino cinema, where the English-language version of The Third Man is screened several times a week. A new temporary exhibition opened at the Third Man Museum on April 27, 2019 to mark 70 years since the premiere of the Third Man.

These and other special Viennese encounters can be found online at The Microsite contains numerous tips and suggestions for visitors looking to engage with the city and its inhabitants on a different level.
