Vienna Media News 03/2019 News from Vienna’s culinary scene

The Naschmarkt is not just a great place to pick up quality groceries, it also has a thriving bar and restaurant scene, which was recently given yet another boost by the arrival of Bar Krawall. Krawall’s extensive wine list is complemented by culinary specialties including bison, water buffalo, yak and game, exquisite cheeses from Vienna-based cheesemaker Käserei Lingenhel and excellent baked goods from the award-winning Joseph Brot. Archetypal Viennese Café-Konditorei chain Aida has struck upon a very special location for its latest branch in the fourth district. Customers can sit down to a Melange coffee and a cream slice in an ornate space once occupied by a fin-de-siècle milliner. One representative of a new generation of Viennese coffeemakers has now made its first foray into the world of coffee roasting: Jonas Reindl Coffee Roasters has now set up shop in the seventh district, having had a café near the university in the ninth district for some time. Kruste&Krume Greisslerei is the name of a new specialist bakery store in the fourth district. It sells premium quality flour alongside tons of other ingredients and gadgets, as well as offering courses for budding home bakers. The nation’s first “flour grocers” also organizes a sizeable bread festival which will bring the best bakers from Austria and abroad to Vienna’s Marx-Halle in March 23, 2019.

Wilde Ehe is a new restaurant located in a distinctive turn-of-the-century building in the eighteenth district close to the popular Kutschkermarkt – which supplies many of the organic ingredients used in its dishes. The old Gaumenspiel restaurant in the seventh district is now under new management as Stellas. Its menu is inspired by the flavors of the Mediterranean and Asia. Dishes with their roots in Austria are also part of the new focus. Quintessentially Viennese eatery Buchecker & Sohn is opening a new location in the fourth district in March 2019. A classic Viennese cuisine specialist, it is moving into a restaurant vacated by toque-winning chef Christian Petz on Gusshausstrasse near Karlsplatz. The Hyatt Group will open its latest venture Hotel Andaz Vienna Am Belvedere in the tenth district at the end of April 2019. Its restaurant Eugen21 takes its name from Prince Eugene of Savoy, who built the neighboring Upper Belvedere as his summer residence. Drinks and great views will be the USP at the new lifestyle hotel’s rooftop Aurora bar.

A number of other interesting restaurant projects are lined up and ready to go in time for spring 2019. Cäcilia Havmöller and Susanna Paller, founders of the successful Veganista ice salon chain want their new project The LaLa to reaffirm their passion and devotion to healthy and creative vegan food. This vegan restaurant will open on Neustiftgasse in the seventh district at the same time that the seven Veganista ice salons return to action after the winter break. Dampfbäckerei Öfferl is set to become the latest addition to the ranks of great bakeries found in the Austrian capital in spring 2019. The delicious bread and baked goods offered by this Lower Austrian artisanal company beloved of some of the city’s top restaurants will soon be available to buy from a shop featuring a show bakery in a sought-after first-district location. Towering 252 meters in the air, the Donauturm in the twenty-second district offers great views of the city. And now the revolving restaurant 170 meters above ground has been joined by Donaubräu and its large beer garden at the foot of the tower in the leafy Donaupark.

Vienna’s top chefs are also writing their own headlines. Sören Herzig who has built up a strong reputation at various restaurants including Amadors Wirtshaus und Greisslerei is gearing up to open his own restaurant in the fifteenth district (Schanzstrasse 14) in April 2019. The interiors are the handiwork of Viennese architects Büro KLK, who picked up a 2017 American Architecture Prize for Krypt Bar in the ninth district. Alexander Mayer (formerly of O boufés and Blue Mustard, among others) is busy working on his own bistro/deli hybrid. The new store will open in April 2019 on Jasomirgottstrasse, which is perpendicular to Stephansplatz. And star Christian Petz will be putting in a guest appearance at Dstrikt Steakhouse at the luxury Ritz-Carlton Vienna between now and the end of June 2019 where he will be showcasing his considerable talents.
