Vienna Media News 12/2018 Ice magic

Open in the heart of the city from January 18 to March 3, 2019, Vienna Ice World is a true skaters’ paradise. Each winter, an 8,000m² rink is set up on Rathausplatz where visitors can glide around to their hearts’ content. A smaller area measuring around 3,000m², known as the Kleiner Eistraum, is open from November 16, 2018, running at the same time as Vienna Christmas World and the Christmas Market. The Kleiner Eistraum continues until January 6, 2019, reopening on January 18, 2019 after a short break while the rest of the rink is set up, as part of the much larger Vienna Ice World.

There is more to Vienna Ice World than physical activity – it is also perfect for all the romantics out there. The Gothic Revival City Hall provides a beautiful backdrop for the glittering ice rink, particularly after night falls, while the neighbouring Rathauspark is transformed into a fairy-tale universe with ice trails winding their way through the beautifully illuminated trees.

Vienna Ice World has something for everyone, from beginners to pros, families with small children, competition skaters and hobbyists. A free practice rink is open to young skaters on Monday to Friday from 10am to 4pm. At 5pm it reopens as an eight-lane curling rink where visitors can try their hand at Eisstockschiessen – traditional Austrian curling.

Open from 10am to 10pm, Vienna Ice World comes with a musical backdrop that includes a bit of everything, from pop to waltzes. Numerous outdoor food stands and an Alpine hut with terrace offer a full range of food and drink, spoiling guests with regional and organic specialties.

And there are plenty of ways to keep the cold at bay – from organic punch to mugs of tea. 2,000 pairs of pre-warmed skates are available to hire and any clothing and shoes can be securely stored in the lockers provided.
