Vienna Media News 08/2018 Vienna Design Week 2018

In autumn 2018, the Austrian capital will be turned into a showroom and centre for design when Vienna Design Week returns for its 12th instalment. This year’s event will bring together Viennese museums and producers and designers from all over the world, giving anyone eager to find out more a unique insight into the world of design in all its rich variety via more than 100 events, presentations, installations, tours and numerous parties. Core themes for 2018 include urban food production and consumption, and opportunities for virtual and augmented reality in design. In partnership with the sound:frame audio-visual art agency, Vienna Design Week will be bringing an installation created by London-based design studio Marshmallow Laser Feast to the VR Vienna Meetup community conference in Vienna for the first time.

Long-standing collaborator, the Vienna Tourist Board, will be featuring in the Virtual and Augmented Reality category this year. VR goggles will bring 360° footage of the Summer Night’s Concert and other highlights to life. This year’s festival will also explore design as a means of expression and a tool for protest, in a joint project created by a group of designers, experts, activists and NGOs.

Each year sees the spotlight fall on a different district, with Vienna Design Week 2018 focusing on the seventh district – location of festival HQ in the late-nineteenth century wings of the Sophienspital hospital and its leafy grounds featuring Martin Kohlbauer’s contemporary extension. The curated “passion paths” give Austrian and international designers the chance to work alongside Vienna-based companies and develop collaborative projects with them. In 2018 the initiatives will profile companies from the first and seventh districts.

Each year Vienna Design Week provides an insight into design elsewhere in Europe by showcasing a different feature country. This autumn it will be Poland’s turn. In an extension of its centenary of regained independence celebrations, it will be running the rule over 100 years of design with a focus on young Polish design as well as various exhibitions including The ABC of Polish Design.
