Vienna Media News 06/2018 Vienna’s summer of music

Each year the Music Film Festival on Rathausplatz attracts around 900,000 visitors from Austria and the rest of the world. Its successful focus on film and food has seen the event emerge as one of the biggest culinary and culture festivals in Europe. After nightfall classical, pop, rock and jazz films are shown free of charge on a giant screen outside City Hall, while hungry music-fans can pick up fantastic food and drink from the 26 concession stands dotted around the square. On selected Saturdays there is live music as well as jazz brunch on the weekend.

ImPulsTanz, Europe’s largest dance festival, transforms the capital into a mecca for fans of dance. For four weeks the city’s highest-profile venues are given over to contemporary dance and performance art in all its rich variety. In more than 200 workshops covering every genre imaginable, world-class dancers share their knowledge with participants of all ages and abilities. Enthusiasts can also dance the night away at DJ nights and concerts in the ImPulsTanz Festival Lounge hosted at Vestibül in the Burgtheater.

The free Popfest Wien festival on Karlsplatz presents the highlights of Austria’s innovative pop scene. Local indie pioneers Naked Lunch, garage rock musicians Dives, R&B singer and rapper Mavi Phoenix and rock band Kreisky will all take to the floating stage in front of the Baroque Karlskirche church during the festival. In addition to performances by around 60 Austrian live acts, Popfest also features a series of all-star panels, live showcases and discussions.

Fantastic music on stage, fine food and drinks in a Bedouin tent, traditional arts and crafts and contemporary design at the African bazaar: all part and parcel of the Africa Days on the Danube Island. There are also drum workshops, a great children’s entertainment programme and two live concerts every evening. The festival plays out between the Florisdorfer Brücke and Brigittenauer Brücke bridges.
