Vienna Media News 06/2018 On the trail of art in Vienna

curated by_ has established itself as an important fixture on the contemporary art calendar over the ten years since its creation. Backed by selected Viennese galleries, the festival will be giving pride of place to the city and its most distinctive features from September 13 to October 13, 2018. The spotlight will fall on aspects such as life from the Baroque era to the present day, its political environment and its culturally significant role as a bridge between east and west.

Open House Wien takes a distinctly more hands-on approach to architecture. For two days, on September 15 and 16, more than 200 volunteers will be out in the field, ready to give free short tours and reveal some of the stories behind the city’s most architecturally relevant buildings.

From September 26-30, 2018 Parallel Vienna will shine a light on divergent positions in new and established contemporary art.

Also in September, viennacontemporary will open up its doors to art buffs at the Marx Halle from September 27-30, 2018. Built at the end of the 19th century by the architect Rudolf Frey, this former market hall was Austria’s first wrought iron construction. This year it will showcase a broad range of contemporary international art for the third time. Fringe events including video presentations and discussions round out the programme.

On October 6, 2018 countless museums and galleries throughout the city will stay open from 6pm to 1am when the Long Night of the Museums returns for the 19th time. The guide booklets will be available online and at participating museums from the start of September. They contain details of participating venues and special events such as discussions with artists, workshops and exclusive themed tours.

The “Long Night of Books” kicks off Austrian book fair Buch Wien, which will play out at Messe Wien from November 7-11, 2018. Austrian and international publishers will present their publications at the show, while a programme of around 450 events will give the leading lights on the literary scene an opportunity to present their output during the reading festival.

From November 10-18, 2018, the 50th Art&Antique fair for art, antiques and design will draw fans of the finer things in life to the former Habsburg residence of the Hofburg. Around 50 galleries and art dealers will offer artworks for sale in the exclusive setting of the state rooms. The scope of the event covers everything from Austrian Art Nouveau and Art Deco, to porcelain and silverware, to folk art and Asian art.

Taglined ‘Promising Paradise’, this year's Vienna Art Week will provide an engaging discourse focused on notions of paradise between November 19 and 25. Additional highlights include the Open Studio Day, which gives an insight into the day-to-day workings of around 50 participating workshops, as well as visits to ‘alternative spaces’ that are given over to discovering the cultural significance of independent spaces for art (2018.viennaartweek.at).
