Vienna Media News 05/2018 New arrivals on Vienna’s hotel scene
Numerous accommodations have sprung up around the Hauptbahnhof development over the past few years, and other new projects are already on the way. The Mooons (170 rooms) boutique hotel on Wiedner Gürtel hopes to carve out a niche for itself from mid-2019 with a combination of smart, affordable luxury, a restaurant, garden and roof terraces, and a fully-equipped gym. Andaz Vienna Am Belvedere (303 rooms) is due to open in spring 2019. This lifestyle hotel was designed by the Italian star architect Renzo Piano and built by Austrian property company Signa and the Hyatt Group. A sky bar on the 16th floor, 60 meters above street level, will open up previously unseen views of the city.
There are also a number of interesting hotel projects in some of the city’s newest urban development areas. The HoHo Hotel is due to open at the end of 2018 in the HoHo Wien building in Seestadt Aspern in north eastern Vienna. Located in Vienna’s green periphery, HoHoWien is the world’s only 24-story timber high rise. Towering 84 meters above ground, once fully let it will contain restaurants, offices, commercial businesses, apartments and a hotel. It takes just 25 minutes to reach Seestadt from the center of town on the U2 subway line. A new district is also springing up in the part of the second district formerly occupied by the Nordbahnhof railway yards. The Austria Campus office complex is set to welcome the budget design hotel roomz, which is the chain’s second location in Vienna. Due to open in mid-2018, it will offer 270 rooms, a restaurant, bar and gym. Hamburg’s Novum Group is expanding into Vienna, or the twentieth district to be more precise, where it will open the 159-room niu Franz in summer 2018.
The Lenikus group is planning two hotels on Bauernmarkt in the historic city center. Work to construct a five-star grand hotel with 75 rooms and suites on five floors of a heritage-listed Baroque building at Bauernmarkt 1 is scheduled for completion by early 2019. Another hotel at Bauernmarkt 21 – with around 100 rooms as well as event spaces – is shaping up for completion by mid-2020.
Elsewhere, Hotel Kummer on Vienna’s popular Mariahilfer Strasse shopping street is being remodeled as a boutique lifestyle hotel. It will reopen as Hotel Motto with 90 rooms, an organic bakery and retail spaces in 2020. Designed by star architect Jean Nouvel, the luxury Sofitel Vienna Stephansdom in the second district has just updated its interior design. All of the 182 rooms at the hotel on the Danube Canal, and its lobby, have been given a facelift by renowned Viennese architect Gregor Eichinger. The tiles feature original patterns dating back to the days of the Dual Monarchy, while other aspects of the new interiors reflect designs lifted from the Wiener Werkstätte archives, as well as Viennese Biedermeier accents. Das Triest in the fourth district is expanding. Incorporating a neighboring building, it will feature 50 more rooms, and a new restaurant, bar and conference area on the top floor when the extension opens in fall 2018.
