The luxurious Hotel Sacher has expanded its café and restaurant space in recent months. The new Sacher Eck, across from the State Opera, has been decked out in the hotel’s typical style with plush red seats, marble, and crystal chandeliers. Over two floors, it offers tasty bites to eat as well as the legendary Sacher Torte. Florian Günzel, previously the chef at Das Loft at the Sofitel Vienna Stephansdom, opened his own new restaurant in mid-March: [aend], in the sixth district. The restaurant is based around casual fine dining and multi-course set menus. The kitchen is situated in the middle of the restaurant, a space of about 100m².
On Herrengasse in the first district, the new Tian Bistro will soon offer original vegetarian dishes, which will also be available to take away. It is the second bistro concept from the Michelin-starred Tian restaurant, which takes meat-free cuisine to a new level. Viennese bakery chain Anker has opened an all-vegan branch in the city centre. At its Stephansplatz location, in the underground station, exclusive vegan snacks are offered alongside an assortment of 50 vegan products.
Vegan burgers are the star attraction at Swing Kitchen, which recently opened its fifth outlet in Vienna. On Währinger Strasse in the ninth district, its trademark vegan, climate-friendly fast food is served without a trace of plastic packaging. GM-free ingredients from regional producers are used wherever possible. Vegan ice cream parlour Veganista also continues to expand and has opened its sixth branch on Amerlingstrasse in the sixth district. 18 different varieties are on offer every day, from classics such as chocolate and strawberry, to more unusual flavours including basil or maple pecan. One of the biggest selling products is the “Inbetwiener” – different flavours of ice cream sandwiched between two cookies.
Café & Schloss Cobenzl, a popular destination on Cobenzl – one of the hills surrounding Vienna – will be completely refurbished from 2019. The café will remain open for Sunday picnics and for events, until fall 2018.
