Vienna Media News 10/2017 New Arrivals on Vienna’s Hotel Scene

Ruby Hotels opened their third Hotel in Vienna in April 2017. Ruby Lissi Hotel & Bar, located in the former main post office on Fleischmarkt in the old town, offers 107 rooms on four floors. Inspired by the golden age of rail travel, the interiors feature hand rails and waiting room sofas. There are two new arrivals at the Hauptbahnhof (Vienna Main Station): the four-star Novotel Wien Hauptbahnhof (266 rooms) and the three-star ibis Wien Hauptbahnhof (311 rooms), both of which opened in July 2017. Located in the booming Quartier Belvedere, they are linked by a shared terrace. The Novotel has its own restaurant, a gym and a sauna zone with views of Vienna – as well as five bee hives on the roof.

More hotels are already being planned in the vicinity. The Mooons (170 rooms) boutique hotel has announced its intention to open in mid-2018, and hopes to carve out a niche for itself with a combination of smart, affordable luxury, a restaurant, garden and roof terraces and a fully-equipped gym. A virtual concierge, mobile check-in and e-car hire are all part of the service. Andaz am Belvedere Vienna (303 rooms) is due to start operating in spring 2019. Designed by the Italian star architect Renzo Piano and built by Austrian property company Signa and the Hyatt Group, this luxury hotel is located between the Main Station and the 21er Haus. The two building elements are linked via interwoven bridges, and a sky bar 60 metress above street level will offer views of the city below from the 16th floor.

There are also a number of interesting hotel projects in some of the city’s newest urban development areas. The HoHo Hotel is due to open at the end of 2018 in the HoHo Wien building in Seestadt Aspern in north eastern Vienna. Located in Vienna’s green periphery, HoHoWien is the world’s only 24-story timber high rise. Towering 84 metres above ground, will contain restaurants, offices, commercial businesses, apartments and a hotel. It takes just 25 minutes to reach Seestadt from the centre of town on the U2 subway line. A new district is also springing up in the 2nd district in the area formerly occupied by the Nordbahnhof railway yards. Currently under construction, the Austria Campus office complex is set to welcome the budget design hotel Roomz. The chain’s second location in Vienna, due to open in 2018, it will offer 270 rooms, a restaurant, bar and gym. Hamburg’s Novum Group is expanding into Vienna, or the 20th district to be more precise, where it will open the 159-room niu Franz in early 2018. The hotel will be inspired by “Viennese opulence meets hipster design”. Other projects include the Jaz in the City hotel (Deutsche Hospitality) in the 6th district as well as a luxury hotel in the historic Alte Post complex in the old town, both of which are scheduled to open in 2020.
