Vienna’s MuseumsQuartier (MQ) is famous for its world-class galleries. But when summer rolls around, the complex’s huge courtyards are transformed into one of the capital’s top chill-out destinations. Sommer im MQ is all about chilling and hanging out in the al fresco cafés and bars, relaxing on the brightly colored loungers, playing boules and lapping up the DJ sounds. This year the MuseumsQuartier has its very own mini golf course called MQ Amore: the individual holes feature sculptures created by various artists that pose an interesting challenge for players to overcome.

The Danube Canal is another of Vienna’s summertime hotspots. Next to the historic city center, the car-free banks of this arm of the Danube exude a Riviera atmosphere in summer. Trendy beach bars rub shoulders with hip pop-up joints, as informal deckchairs line up against chic bar stools – and everyone is out on the waterside to enjoy fine food, drinks and music.

The parks and gardens around the old town are also perfect for a spot of relaxation. Shady trees and sweet-smelling roses are the order of the day in the Volksgarten, alongside delicious drinks and fine food in the Volksgarten Pavillon. In the Burggarten visitors can sit back and watch the world go by from the comfort of the Palmenhaus restaurant terrace. Stadtpark also has more than its fair share of culinary highlights including the award-winning Steirereck (two Michelin stars in 2017 and tenth in the 2017 World's 50 Best Restaurants guide).

And that’s before the rooftop hotel bars enter the equation – here, culinary treats come with a great view. Great examples include the 25hours hotel next to MuseumsQuartier, the Atmosphere Rooftop Bar at the upscale Ritz-Carlton Vienna on Schubertring and the Hotel Lamée in the historic city center.
