Vienna Media News 05/2017 Fun in the sand on the Danube Island

For ten days Vienna will host the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships. With more than 220 member associations, the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) is one of the world’s largest sports organizations. Vienna’s Danube Island will stage all of the group games as well as the finals. Over 10 days of sporting action the best 48 men’s and women’s teams will compete for a million-dollar prize pot.

A special 16,000m² arena will be set up on the Danube Island for the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships, including a purpose-built, 10,000-seat center court. A VIP area with 2,200 seats will be situated next to the generously-proportioned public area, as well as a separate area for live TV broadcasts. Anyone unable to find a seat in the stadium can follow all of the games live on the giant video wall in the fan zone. In addition, the opening ceremony and a closing event there will be parties and concerts in the beach village to enjoy. A youth sports fair with sports and entertainment will also be held during the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships. Spectacular action shows are also planned, and fans will have the chance to join in and try out a variety of sports equipment.

The Danube Island is the ideal venue for this major sporting event. Built to protect the city from flooding, this 3.9km², 21km-long artificial island is a popular leisure destination and recreation area. It only takes a few minutes to reach the city center via the U1, U2 or U6 subway lines. Natural bathing coves, flat beaches, a waterslide, a surfing school, a waterski lift and boat hire provide plenty of ways to get active or to relax and get away from it all. The island is also a popular festival venue. For 33 years now it has hosted the free open air Danube Island Festival which attracts three million people at the end of June.
