Vienna Media News 11/2016 City of film music

Each fall Vienna hosts the crème de la crème of the film music industry, when the Hollywood in Vienna festival comes to town to present contemporary and classic masterpieces. At the festival concert gala the City of Vienna also presents the Max Steiner Film Music Achievement Award to some of the leading film music composers of our time. Previous winners include James Newton Howard (2015), Randy Newman (2014) and James Horner (2013). But that’s not the only reason for the international film music industry to come to Vienna. The capital is also home to Synchron Stage Vienna, which is currently the world’s most innovative recording studio for film music. Located in the 23rd district, its exceptional acoustics put Vienna’s newest sound stage on a par with today’s top film music studios in Los Angeles, London and Berlin. At the same time, the Synchron Stage Orchestra film music session ensemble is starting to take shape, ready to offer all the skills needed to meet the precise standards of the studios and leading film producers. Synchron Stage Vienna is operated by the Vienna Symphonic Library, a local company which specializes in the development of music software and sample libraries. With more than two million audio samples currently available, this high-end service is used by big-name music makers such as Grammy winner James Newton Howard. The Vienna Symphonic Library is the market leader and by far the largest sample repository of its kind.

The Max Steiner Orchestra has been the go-to ensemble for highly-professional film music and media music recordings ever since it was formed in Vienna back in 2012. Musical composer Andrew Lloyd Webber, the opera singer Erwin Schrott and the singer José Feliciano are just some of the stars to have collaborated with the ensemble so far. Another option, Vienna Music Angels, is the city’s first preparation service for movie score recordings. Meanwhile, the Vienna Film Commission is the new central service and point of contact for anyone filming in the city. Run by the city council, it supports local and international film productions in the city. The body provides a free support service for film and TV productions such as movies, documentary films, documentaries, student films and advertising. The English-language Vienna – City of Film Music brochure gives an overview of the city’s key film music institutes.
