Design is about more than pretty objects, it is a fundamental component of cultural production. This is the philosophy behind Vienna Design Week, which will take place in the Austrian capital from September 30-October 9, 2016. Curated by Lilli Hollein, the tenth instalment of the popular festival will bring more than 150 events, exhibitions, installations, tours and parties to various venues throughout the city.
Vienna Design Week will set up shop in numerous urban locations. This year’s event will bring together museums, producers and designers from all over the world, giving anyone with an interest in the topic a unique insight into the world of design. The festival’s tenth edition centres on Vienna’s fifth district. Festival HQ on Schlossgasse will present a series of exhibitions and act as the meeting point for guided tours. This year’s guest nation, the Czech Republic, is also represented with its own exhibition.
In addition to tried-and-tested formats such as City Work (social design projects), Passionswege design paths (cooperation projects between Viennese manufacturers and designers) and Debut (a presentation platform for design universities), the 2016 festival will also focus on graphic design and industrial design. The anniversary will be marked with a special edition magazine designed by ten Vienna-based studios. A book entitled ‘Stadtarbeit – Ten Years of Design Featuring the City’ is also in the pipeline.
