Entitled “The Rhythm of Vienna”, the new international short film competition was initiated by the Vienna Tourist Board in collaboration with the VIS Vienna Independent Shorts festival and Vienna Shorts Agentur at the start of the year. In January 2016, VIS issued a call for young professional filmmakers to present their concepts for a short film lasting a maximum of five minutes. The submissions, which must have a clearly recognizable link to Vienna and can come from any particular genre except documentary, must be entered by February 29, 2016 at the latest.
A panel of experts including Austrian actor and director Karl Markovics, have until March 18, 2016 to review all the entries and select the three best concepts. Each of the three winners will be handed a production budget of EUR 5,000 to create their films in Vienna between the end of May and mid-July. The production teams will also be profiled at the VIS Vienna Independent Shorts festival (May 25-31, 2016). In addition to a location tour of the city, additional support will also be provided when it comes to securing the requisite equipment and filming permits. All three films will be premiered in Vienna in mid-September. The film premiere will also mark the start of voting for a public prize, with a further EUR 3,000 going to the people’s choice. After the initial screening, the films will be shown online, at international film festivals and at the VIS Festival in May 2017.
