A huge ice landscape, an Alpine lodge including a viewing terrace, and eight curling lanes will open to visitors of Vienna Ice World at 7pm on January 21, 2016. Every day until March 6, 2016, ice-skating fans will find plenty of space to enjoy themselves on the skating rink in front of City Hall, and the ice trails that wend their way through the adjoining Rathauspark. Vienna Ice World gets a bit bigger every year. With 8,000 square meters of ice to skate on the event has grown yet again in 2016 – this time by 1,000 square meters – to cater for the increasing numbers it attracts. In 2015 there were around 700,000 visitors. The number of curling lanes has also risen for 2016.
For beginners, there is a 550-square-meter practice area, open all day at the weekend, and from 9am to 4pm Monday-Friday. The same space is used for the eight curling lanes, from 5pm on weekdays. 600 lockers allow visitors to the Ice World to store clothing and their shoes while they skate. And 2,000 pairs of pre-warmed ice skates, from size 23 to size 52, are available to hire. Children can borrow one of 300 safety helmets free of charge. An original Alpine lodge – also bigger for 2016 – is the ideal place to take a break and refuel between skating sessions. On sunny winter days, visitors can relax and watch the skaters go by from its terrace.
