Completed in the Neo-renaissance style by Viennese architects August Sicard von Sicardsburg and Eduard van der Nüll between 1861 and 1869, the Vienna State Opera opened on May 25, 1869 with a performance of Mozart’s Don Giovanni. The opera house sustained significant bomb damage in the Second World War and reopened to the public in 1955 with a performance of Beethoven’s Fidelio.  Its repertoire spans works from the Baroque era through to the 21st century. With a season extending from September to June, it manages to pack in 300 performances of more than 60 different operas and ballets – something unmatched by any other opera house on the planet. A permanent ensemble of singers, the ballet ensemble, the Vienna State Opera Orchestra/Vienna Philharmonic, the choir and the stage orchestra form the core of the venue’s artistic identity. Each year an impressive roll call of world-class opera singers and star conductors perform at the Staatsoper.

On one night of the year the Vienna State Opera is transformed into a giant dance floor: the Opera Ball has made a name for itself the world over as the epitome of Austrian ball culture. Held during Fasching, or carnival season, this musical extravaganza combines high culture and entertainment. The Vienna State Opera’s Oper live am Platz festival offers classical music free of charge.  In April, May June and September it shows around 80 opera and ballet performances on a 50 square metre screen outside the opera house. Opera fans all over the world can watch high-quality live broadcasts of around 45 opera and ballet performances via the Vienna State Opera online Wiener Staatsoper live at home service.
