Vienna Media News 09/2014 Trend: Bread - selling like hot cakes

Organic bakery Gragger has opened a branch on Spiegelgasse in Vienna’s first district. Natural materials such as oak and slate define the interior, and the heart of the bakery is its wood-fired oven where the bread is baked: moist whole spelt bread, fragrant cheese straws, and crunchy baguettes. The basis is always natural sourdough, and baking mixtures and raising agents are strictly avoided. At lunchtime, Gragger serves soups, stews and salads to accompany the bread. Another branch recently opened in the seventh district.

There is often a line of customers waiting at Joseph on Naglergasse in the first district. This small boutique bakery only sells bread made from biodynamically cultivated flour and hand-made using traditional techniques. Alongside classics such as the Altwiener Hausbrot (old Vienna household loaf) and Handsemmel rolls, specialties include organic rye bread with honey and lavender, and chestnut Guglhupf cake. Joseph supplies Vienna’s top restaurants and delicatessens, and opened a new branch with a bistro and patisserie on Landstrasser Hauptstrasse in the third district in 2014. As well as the baked delicacies on offer, a delicious range of snacks is served in stylish surroundings from breakfast to dinner.

Also on Landstrasser Hauptstrasse, just a little farther out from the city centre, Ströck Feierabend is another Viennese bakery with its own bistro. From 4pm, cold and hot dishes – as well as, of course, bread, rolls and pastries – are served at this modern eatery with outdoor seating. Breakfast is available from 7am on weekends and public holidays. Bakery Felzl has established three boutique bakeries and cafés in Vienna which also make excellent choices for breakfast at the weekend. Felzl specialises in Italian bread and serves Illy coffee.
