Vienna Media News 07/2014 News from Vienna’s museums

Following a redesign and modernisation programme including barrier-free access, the former Tramway Museum will reopen as The Depot – Wiener Linien Transport Museum on September 13, 2014. Located in a heritage-listed former tram depot in the third district and open year round, it will exhibit historic vehicles and present fascinating insights into the history of Vienna’s public transport, featuring simulations and multimedia content.

The Funeral Museum reopens on October 9, 2014 at its new location, the Central Cemetery. Hundreds of items on display in the 300 m2 of exhibition space examine funerary tradition, burial rituals and the peculiarities of the Viennese population's relationship with death. The show’s major focus is Vienna and the concept of the “beautiful funeral” from the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

The opening of the new Metro Kinokulturhaus is planned for October 2014 when the addition of two floors will extend the premises to 1,800m2. Operated by the Austrian Film Archives, the film centre will include around 500m2 of exhibition space, an audiovisual library, digital viewing stations and a new studio movie theatre. An exhibition on early film and its origins and a World War I-themed film screening are scheduled for the opening.
