Located close to the Prater park and the Messe Wien expo centre in the up-and-coming second district, the Vienna University of Economics and Business’ new home will accommodate over 25,000 students and 1,800 staff, and is served by the U2 subway line. The central Library and Learning Centre created by Zaha Hadid Architecture is surrounded by five building complexes which were planned by CRABstudio (London), Atelier Hitoshi Abe (Sendai), BUSarchitektur ZT (Vienna), Estudio Carme Pinós (Barcelona) and NO.MAD Arquitectos (Madrid).
The campus has been built using green building methods. More than 70 per cent of the complex’s heating and cooling comes from geothermal energy (ground water), and all buildings are fitted with special daylight-controlled lighting that also takes usage into account. All outdoor spaces are accessible to the general public, creating a new leisure area for this part of the capital. The restaurants, bakery, supermarket, book stores, kindergarten and sports centre are likewise open to the public.
