Colorful tiles on the roof of St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna

Vienna Media News 9/2013 Christmas markets in Vienna in 2013

Vienna’s Christmas markets (see detailed listings below) are located at some of the city’s most attractive public spaces. The Christmas Market and Magic of Advent on Rathausplatz is the largest with about 150 stalls and a Christmas workshop where kids can bake and do arts and crafts. For traditional handicrafts and Christmas music head for the Old Viennese Christmas Market on the Freyung or the Am Hof Christmas Market. Beautiful handmade gifts can also be picked up at the Arts and Crafts Market in front of Karlskirche, where kids love to play in the straw around the petting zoo or visit the candle-making workshop. Romantic cobbled streets lend a unique charm to the Christmas market at Spittelberg, while impressive imperial backdrops make for a special atmosphere at the Christmas villages on Maria-Theresien-Platz and in front of Schönbrunn Palace and the Belvedere. There’s lots going on outside the center of town if you venture out to the Christmas Market at the Türkenschanzpark, or Weihnachtszauber at Schloss Wilhelminenberg with its spectacular views over the city.

Most of the markets are permanent fixtures over the Christmas period, but others are temporary affairs. The Design Christmas Market at the Stilwerk design centre only opens on the Advent weekends, and is the place to go for fashion accessories, designer clothing, ceramics and other chic creations. Connoisseurs of design will also be on cloud nine at WeihnachtsQuartier in the MuseumsQuartier on the first weekend of Advent, while the stalls of designer-makers and small labels at Lights 2013 at the Werkstätten- und Kulturhaus (WUK) from December 6-8 offer something a bit more off-beat. For hipsters looking for a cooler Christmas experience, the DJs, punch stands and curling lanes at Winter im MQ in the MuseumsQuartier is the place to be seen.
