Vienna Media News 11/2012 Happy Birthday Albertina!

The Albertina reopened on March 14, 2003 after a program of refurbishment, restoration and new building work that went on for more than a decade. The official birthday celebrations (March 11-17) will be something for visitors of all ages to enjoy. Two major exhibitions are also lined up for the 2013 anniversary program. From March 14 until June 30, 2013 visitors will be treated to a selection of precious drawings by Dutch masters. Drawn from the museum's own holdings, the exhibition will showcase works by Hieronymus Bosch, Pieter Bruegel the Elder, Rembrandt and Peter Paul Rubens. Matisse and the Fauves will conclude the year's celebrations, running from September 20, 2013 until January 12, 2014.

The Albertina's collection was founded in 1776 by Duke Albert of Saxe-Teschen, a son-in-law of Empress Maria Theresa, and currently includes more than one million prints and 60,000 sketches. Famous works - including Dürer's Hare and Hands Folded For Prayer, Rubens' studies of children, and masterpieces by Schiele, Cézanne, Klimt, Kokoschka, Picasso and Rauschenberg - are regularly put on display at special exhibitions. Modern masterpieces also form part of the current permanent collection. Located near the southern tip of the imperial Hofburg palace complex on the last remnants of the city's fortifications, the Albertina is the largest former Habsburg residence in the first district.
