The Vienna Boys' Choir has been located at the Augartenpalais in the second district since 1948. The historic building in the Baroque park is home to both the school and a boarding house. From December on, the choir will also have its own rehearsal and concert facilities a stone's throw from the school. The Augarten music centre is a mixture of historic and new buildings. Architects archipel architektur + kommunikation have added a modern extension, housing the concert hall and ancillary rooms, to the old servants' quarters and the Baroque Augarten wall.
The 415-seat concert hall has ultramodern sound and stage equipment. The Boys' Choir can use it for rehearsals as well as concerts and children's operas. The new building will also serve as a music and theater center for children and teenagers, and for cultural events staged in cooperation with other organizers. Ranging in age from 10 to 14, the 100 or so members of the Vienna Boys' Choir are split into four separate concert choirs. Each year they give some 300 concerts before a total of almost half a million people. The Vienna Boys' Choir can be heard in Vienna at Sunday mass at the Hofburgkapelle (September to June) and at classical concerts at the Musikverein (every Friday in April, May, June, September and October), with performances at the new Augarten music center due to start soon.
