Vienna Design Week owes much of its success to variety and networking. It also paves the way for partnerships between up-and-coming design talents and established manufacturers, transforms museums into showrooms and hosts informative tours with the producers themselves. Panel discussions, talks and parties are another side to the ten-day event. These days the Passionswege design paths are an integral part of Vienna Design Week. Under this format, selected designers team up with Viennese businesses and traditional manufacturers to showcase experimental and playful variations on the theme of design. Festivalgoers can see the thought-provoking finished products for themselves by following one of the different trails that criss-cross the city.
Spain is the guest country in 2012, and echoes of the country's lively design scene will crop up all over this year's Vienna Design Week. A pair of special exhibitions will give an in-depth insight into all aspects of the nation's design scene. As always, there will be a special focus on a different part of Vienna, with Ottakringer Strasse - a busy shopping street that runs through the 16th and 17th district - in the spotlight this year. The centrally located Kunsthalle project space on Karlsplatz will double up as an info point and laboratory for the 2012 festival. Vienna Design Week will play out for the sixth time in 2012. Last year's event attracted an impressive 30,000 visitors.
