Vienna Media News 07/2012 Ed Ruscha at the Kunsthistorisches Museum

Vienna's Kunsthistorisches Museum will kick off a new series of modern and contemporary art shows in 2012. Established international artists will be invited to the Kunsthistorisches Museum to present their works in a series of exhibitions and commissions against the backdrop of art history and the pieces in the museum's collections. The new season will open on September 25, 2012 with a presentation by internationally acclaimed American painter Ed Ruscha. Ruscha's work - shown in Austria for the first time - will also be on display at an exhibition of the artist's monographic output at the Kunsthaus Bregenz from July 2012.

Ed Ruscha was born in 1937 in Omaha, Nebraska and grew up in Oklahoma City. In 1956 he moved to Los Angeles, where he is still based. The city continues to shape the paintings, sketches, prints, photographs and art compendiums in his oeuvre to this day. Ruscha's keen interest in advertising vernacular, American automobile culture and the nation's urban architecture earned the artist a place at a pioneering 1962 exhibition entitled New Painting of Common Objects hosted by the Pasadena Museum of Art. The show was the first in which a museum had dedicated its wallspace to providing an insight into the nascent American pop art movement.  In 2005 Ruscha represented his home country at the 51st Biennale di Venezia. His oeuvre has provided the inspiration for countless retrospectives, including a major show at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York (2004) and another at the Jeu de Paume contemporary art museum in Paris (2006).  His most recent touring exhibition, Ed Ruscha: Fifty Years of Painting, stopped off in 2009 and 2010 at the Hayward Gallery in London, Haus der Kunst in Munich and Moderna Museet in Stockholm.
