Vienna Media News 05/2012 Vienna’s summer of music

The Vienna Philharmonic's Summer Night Concert in the grounds of Schönbrunn Palace promises world class entertainment once again this year. On June 7, 2012 the internationally acclaimed orchestra will perform on a temporary stage in front of the Neptune fountain in the Baroque gardens of this former Habsburg summer residence. The free open air concert will be conducted by Venezuelan maestro Gustavo Dudamel whose impressive career highlights include the musical directorship of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra. Although free and open air is also the order of the day for the 29th Danube Island Festival, the music here is somewhat different. Between June 22 and 24, 2012 this 4.5 kilometer long party zone on the island will have something for everyone, from traditional Austrian Schrammelmusik to the latest chart toppers. Each year this gigantic get-together in one of Vienna's most popular recreation areas draws around three million partygoers.

The very best of world music, jazz and rock is on the menu at the Vienna Jazz Festival which is set to take some of the city's best stages by storm from June 25 to July 9, 2012. Venues include the State Opera House, the MuseumsQuartier and the arcaded courtyard at City Hall. Program highlights include performances by Rufus Wainwright & Band (July 6, 2012) and Eric Burdon & The Animals. Popfest is the perfect place to catch up with the rising stars of Vienna's pop scene. Visitors can familiarize themselves with Viennese pop music from July 26-29, 2012 at the temporary Popfest stage on Karlsplatz - admission is free.
