Vienna Media News 04/2012 Summer of fashion

MQ Summer of Fashion will get underway on June 14, 2012 with a pair of new exhibitions. The first, Reflecting Fashion. Art and Fashion since the Dawn of Modernism, at mumok (www.mumok.at), looks at clothing and fashion as an integral part of art, as seen in the work of artists such as Ellsworth Kelly, Vito Acconci and Daniel Buren since the mid-1960s.  Electronic textiles and portable technology provide the starting point for the second, Technosensual. Where Fashion Meets Technology, which will be hosted by freiraum quartier 21 International (www.quartier21.at). Afterwards there will be a fashion party at the mumok Hofstallungen venue. The opening weekend also features a fashion show by a Viennese fashion and design school on June 15, followed on June 16 by Benoit Maubrey's Audio Ballerinas with their electronic tutus, and a photo booth party.

Participation in the MQ Summer of Fashion is not restricted to on-site attractions such as the mumok, Kunsthalle Wien, Leopold Museum, Tanzquartier Wien and Zoom Children's Museum - a number of external art and cultural institutions will also be involved. Highlights include a dance performance by Lucia Glass in cooperation with Tanzquartier Wien, the official opening of the frame[o]ut film festival with fashion blogger Diane Pernet, and guided tours of the Wien Museum's fashion vaults. Normally off limits to the general public, it's a little known secret that they hold one of Europe's biggest fashion collections. At the Museum of Natural History an unusual fashion show will guide visitors through the evolution of fashion from the Stone Age to the Baroque era. Elsewhere, a group of fashion bloggers will host a flea market, while Biorama's Fair Fair market will give fashion lovers the chance to pick up the very latest in eco-fashion as well as sustainably sourced produce. Designed by Vienna-based architects PPAG, a catwalk in the courtyard of the MuseumsQuarter will provide a common architectural link to span the various events. The MQ Summer of Fashion will be brought to a close by the MQ Vienna Fashion Week (www.mqviennafashionweek.com) from September 12-16 2012, which will showcase the latest collections by Austrian and international designers.
