For a total of four months the Vienna State Opera will be serving up the very best that the genre has to offer in its very own open air opera festival. Selected performances will be screened live on a huge LED video wall on Herbert-von-Karajan-Platz, directly adjacent to the opera house, in April, May, June and September 2012. Performances are subtitled, and information about the piece, the performers, the State Opera and its work is provided before the concert starts and during the intervals. The Oper live am Platz season aims to bring the work of this Viennese institution to an even wider public and in doing so encourage more people to attend performances at the Staatsoper.
The Music Film Festival will play out on a giant screen on Rathausplatz for the 21st time in 2012. Starting at sundown, the outdoor broadcasts range from footage of well-known operas and operettas, to recordings of concerts and ballet productions - all of the screenings are free. Many of the city's best restaurants will stage their very own catering masterclasses to accompany the performances. From noon to midnight visitors can choose from the wide range of local and international specialties on offer at the numerous booths that set up shop each year on the square in front of Vienna's neo-gothic City Hall.
