The Museum of Wishes is the first exhibition to be curated by the MUMOK's new director, Karola Kraus. The wording of the title deliberately references Kaspar König's opening exhibition at the Ludwig Museum in Cologne in 2001, and the Museum of our Wishes, which was mounted by Stockholm's Moderna Museet in 2000 and 2009. The show is organized along chronological and thematic lines to showcase selected highlights of the MUMOK collection from its early modernist works to its most recent, contemporary acquisitions. It will also feature a number of exhibits which the museum wishes to add to its holdings at some point in the future.

The composition of the works on display at this inaugural exhibition is a strong statement of intent and sends out a clear signal regarding the direction the museum will take in future. The Museum of Wishes also sheds light on the museum's future exhibition strategy which will center on large-scale, single-subject shows or group presentations that share close thematic ties with the exhibits in its own holdings. Works by Claire Hooper, winner of the 2010 Baloise Prize, will feature in the show.
